ISLAMABAD: Although pressure mounted on President Zardari to call off his visit to the United Kingdom in protest against anti-Pakistan remarks made by Prime Minister David Cameron in India, there was no official word either from the Foreign Office or the Presidency, lending credence to speculations that the government was engaged in a reappraisal.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir gave fresh recommendations to the president after the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the PML-N lent their supports to calls for a cancellation of the London leg of the president’s visit.

According to sources, the president was very clear that he would go ahead with the plans and the announcement of the visit would probably be made shortly before he leaves Paris for London.

Muttahida chief Altaf Hussain had described Cameron’s comments as lamentable and urged President Zardari to cancel his visit. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, whose party is the main opposition part in the Centre, also made a similar demand.

Although the Foreign Office has already condemned the comments, the military establishment wants a stronger protest. ISI chief Lt Gen Shuja Pasha has already cancelled his visit to London.

Prime Minister Cameron had kicked up a diplomatic row after accusing Pakistan of patronizing export of terror to the neighbouring countries.

Amidst all the confusion at home, Pakistans High Commission in UK issued a press release saying the visit was very much on.

According to the visit itinerary released by Pakistans High Commission: “President Zardari would meet British Prime Minister David Cameron on August 6 at Prime Minister’s country residence in Chequers, on the outskirts of London. He would also meet newly elected members of British Parliament of Pakistani origin. On August 7 he will address Pakistani community in Birmingham.

While much of the focus has been on the controversy surrounding Zardari’s UK journey, he would be hounded by Agosta submarine scam during his three day stay in Paris. This would be his second visit to France, since he came to power in 2008.

The killing of eleven French engineers in Karachi, who were overseeing construction of Agosta B90 submarines in 2002 has been linked to linked to Frances failure to pay a commission for the sale of submarines to Pakistan.

French judges suspect that retro-illegal commissions have been used to finance the presidential campaign of former Prime Minister Edouard Balladur in 1995. Mr Zardari’s host, French President Nicolas Sarkozy was Balladur’s campaign manager in the ballot.
