and then i talk about it later with my colleagues and am informed that that dude sitting in that shop is an aik number ka chakkarbaaz and he does these tactics with everyone who goes to the shop…!!!

the shop is an outlet for a brand name and the dude is a salesperson there. so my workmate asks me irem did you get a receipt from them? and i realise shoot! no i did not get a receipt!!!

no wonder he didnt give me one!!!

khayr it was only a max of 300 rupees I was conned for so its not that bad but still!!!

soch samaj kay shopping kiya karain

My man!!!!

Can you send me his contact info, I'd like to become his student.

Amazes me how we sometimes get so worked up over a few dollars.
Think rich and think big people… don’t sweat the small stuff.

Irem, enjoy your new item :smooth:

Its positively hazardous to send you shopping alone.

Saraay dukaandar bigaRh jayein gay :bummer:

:rotfl: Sorry Irem but I find this very funny. You need a shopping lesson with me.. 4900 ka hotta tu I would have bought it in 4000 or even less :stuck_out_tongue: all the shopkeepers call me the kapattey baji but what the heck, I m saving money here… learn to bargain !

There are too many 'Ji' in this conversation. I would suggest less 'Ji' and more 'No' or 'Nain'

for branded outlets haggling is difficult..in fact can't be done. If the tab says 4,900...you gotta pay it. innit?

but 100 rupay aap ko lena chahiay thay..jaib se he kyon na sahi. chahe baad main aap woh kisi aur ko de detein. :~)

Not necessarily true. The first rule of bargaining/haggling is that it can be done anywhere. Everything is open for negotiation.

A guy I know even bargains when he goes to restaurants. A few times I went with him, he asked for the manager and got a 15% discount off the top, just by arguing that its a slow day so the manager should show some appreciation for the customers. Another place he got a discount by arguing that it is so crowded that the service is not up to the usual standards. Its more a game for him. His philosophy is you are not getting a discount if you don't ask for it. So there is nothing to lose anyway, except time. :)

Another class-fellow in Lahore would haggle to get discounts at all big departmental stores and pretty much any place he would go. He used to claim that he is merely refining his negotiation skills. Not a bad idea, I must say, even though it made him look like an ultra-cheapster in all those places.

Irem: You should've taken Rs. 100, plus asked him for more.

Shopkeepers rip you off big time in Pakistan (at least in Karachi).

Also, if I were you I'd take bills of Rs. 100 and Rs. 500 and would've given him only Rs. 4000 or so. Then I would've bargained or would've just left the shop with the merchandise.

Receipts? Are they of any value in Pakistan? I believe as soon as you pay the amount, there is no return policy. They may exchange, but definitely won't return.

In 1998, when I went to Pakistan I bought a mod chip for PS1. A few minutes later I came across a better mod chip, which was much easier to install. I went back to shop to return the first one, but the guy won't take it back. I was told they place orders for it or something, hence there is no return policy.

On the same trip I bargained for some Nintendo game for my cousin. The man was asking for around Rs. 1000 or so. I managed to bargain for Rs. 400.

It only goes to show that the shopkeepers intially ask you for a huge sum because they know the customer is going to bargain. I'd say its pretty silly if you don't bargain in Pakistan or refuse to take the money.

i know in pakistan i always think i am getting a good deal n then my cousins make fun of me :grumpy:

He just made 20% commission.

You bought something from a male shopkeeper ALONE? You witch.

In my experience. The most renowned bargain place in Karachi is Lunda market. You can make them come down to 10% of the price.

Yeh joota kitnay ka hai ?

hazar rupiya

so rupay lo gay ?

lelo.

Its that simple.

I have enourmous feet which is why I used to buy shoes from lunda. Now I have to spend £60 for a decent pair of shoes. Its painful!
