Those who have lived some considerable time here must have noticed this unique practice here… You cant get fresh mutton or beaf on tuseday and wednesday. They are collectively called ‘mungal our budh ka nagha’ so either you have to eat chicken or fish ( if you cant live without meat for two days) or use frozen stuff or go veggie for two days.
Actually, this distinction was more apparant in olden days when people used to prefer fresh meat every day. Now, frozen stuff is vogue.
the reason behind imposing the ‘holiday’ on butchers few decades ago, was the apprehension of govt that livestock production in country in not enough to meet the demand of masses
Now a very interesting twist in this otherwise harmless and sublime (for cows and sheeps) practice came many many years ago.
I read in Akhbar-e-jahaan a najoomi professor sahab in early ninties when Benazir and Nawaz Sharif used to have government for 1,2 years and got dismissed subsiquently, he gave a very unique solution to their problems. He said that in order to solve these problems of these ‘democratic govts’ They should abandon that meat holiday completely. :rotato:
That mungal budh ka naghaa is a hurdle in pakistan’s smooth sailing as a democratic country. He gave assurance that if they stop this practice, all the problems of this country will sort out amicably.
i found it amusing but never gave it importance.
More interestingly, few years later i read the same assurance by some other najoomi and some convincing reasoning. Then i thought about it
During 1960s … then govt thought that live stock production is not enough in the country to meet the demand.
Yes I agree. Less meat is good for health. But us najoomi sahab ki baat pe bhi tu tawaja do ! He said we should abolish this meat holiday in order to save our country from turmoil
