Reading a novel ‘Kai chaand the sir e aasman’. set in first half of 19th century, before 1857 war’ and is about famous Urdu poet Daagh Dehlvi’s mother ‘Wazeer Khanum’.
So this lady was living with an Englishman Mr Black Marsten and had two children from him. During staying with him, she observed many things about goras of the time and their superiotity complex while dealing with locals. She also tells that goras were allergic to take bath and were dependent on poder (powder). Mr Black had complaints of Indian servants and he kept on telling Wazeer Khanum (tum hindustani chor hote ho)… Wazeer thinking of (chori ooper se seena zori of goras), replied to Mr Black ‘hamre gharon main to chori nahin karte… aap logon ke aane se farq paRa hai’ ![]()
She also observes that in Hindustani families servants like maali, etc are called chacha and respected like elders. Goras didn’t have that habit while dealing with servants especially if they were local Hindustani people. They never said ‘Thank you’ to these local servants.
Quite interesting observations.
So what made these goras so polite in today’s world, that they can even thank beggars who they give khairaat?
Is it something they learnt from the masses in conquered areas like Hindustan or its because now they can’t claim that sun never sets in their empire?
