It seems like that was always meant to be the case and they have merely corrected an error in the previous logo.

back in the day when "typesetting" was done by placing tiny metal letters in rows to make words, sentences and paragraphs for the purpose of offset printing, the adjustment of spacing between the letters was known as "kerning"
this was done to bring uniformity and allow for certain letters to fit together better in some fonts.
