Well "shutting down" implies they are closing shop, getting out of business, whatever. If they close shop, someone else will take their spot. There are plenty of (arguably less able) search engines on the web. So really no big deal. People will get used to it.
However, if your internet shuts down (breaks down) then its a real pain the rear. Biggest kicker is lack of email. Personally, as long as I am getting email, I am pretty sure I can get by without any other form of internet for short durations of time (e.g. vacations etc).
