Well "shutting down" implies they are closing shop, getting out of business, whatever. If they close shop, someone else will take their spot. There are plenty of (arguably less able) search engines on the web. So really no big deal. People will get used to it.
However, if your internet shuts down (breaks down) then its a real pain the rear. Biggest kicker is lack of email. Personally, as long as I am getting email, I am pretty sure I can get by without any other form of internet for short durations of time (e.g. vacations etc).

Who cares, I was anyways planning to move to a village and live in a hut where I would have no Internet connection, no computer. My husband would go out every morning to our farm and make a living selling off our crop and bring back firewood…and I would cook onion and cabbage soup and sit outside and watch the stars and listen to the crickets sing and my girls would roast peanuts in the bonfire…
