cont..d from above!!
Rashid, as always stubborn and prone to irrational behaviour at times, had displayed exemplary patience and tolerance to avoid giving any statement in the press on his ban although he was seething over the injustice done by Procter.
But then he put a wrong foot forward in diplomatic terms when, after initially having turned down an offer from Rameez to file an appeal against the Procter decision, he got an idea out of the blue that he can file a case in the High Court against his ban and get Procter suspended from match-referee duties.
To make matters worse he even called up Rameez and had him speak to his lawyer, the former speaker of the Sindh Assembly Nawab Mirza.
Rashid then sent a letter to the Chairman outlining why he wanted to file the case and other grievances.
The Chairman, it is said, was upset with the language of the letter.
There is no doubt that Rashid could have avoided writing the letter to Tauqir and the unnecessary fuss about filing a case but than the Board didn’t diffuse matters by not inviting him for the President’s function or by Chairman refusal to speak to him.
Unfortunately, all the above incidents and some other internal bickering has now led to the situation where Rashid is on trial by the Chairman and his band of merry men.
Some newspapers have already announced that Inzamam will continue as captain and Moin Khan is being recalled for the South Africa series..
If this happens perhaps the Chairman, his chief executive or chief selector have no inkling of the problems that will then result in the team and cricket set-up.
Already, the situation behind the scenes is not a cosy one at all.
Miandad during his stay in Pindi for the fourth one-dayer tried his best to get Tauqir Zia to have a meeting with him and listen to him. This has not happened so far.
Miandad, it is no secret, is also not happy with the overbearing attitude of Aamer Sohail and his irrational selection decisions or the non-responsive attitude of the Chairman.
And no matter how Sohail or Tauqir might try to justify playing Junaid Zia, the fact is that there is no one in Pakistan except a few who are convinced that the junior Zia played on merit otherwise the youngster, who surely cannot be blamed for finding himself in such a situation, would not have faced the sort of harassment he had to face from the crowds in all the four matches he played. (tutututututu)
Since Tauqir took over as Chairman in November 1999, he has changed four captains and atleast four coaches and all of them have been sacked in unceremonious circumstances.
The backlash of these decisions has been reflected in the performances of the team.
Now, just when the team appears to be heading in the right direction under the leadership of Rashid Latif, the Chairman apparently is thinking about another change - all based on ego problems.
One can only advise him against making any unnecessary or unjustified changes at this crucial juncture because if the Pakistan team has performed poorly in its last few home series it is only because a similar scenario of intrigues, ego problems and uncertainty existed then.
One would not like to see another repeat against South Africa.
Thankfully, since Rashid took over there have been no personality problems in the team, he he has also made an effort to work alongside with Miandad and Haroon with considerable success.
If Rashid has not seen eye to eye with Sohail, at one time the best of friends, it is because for some strange reason neither of them has seen the wisdom of sitting together and discussing frankly the team composition before making any announcements.
** What is most tragic about this whole scenario is that after the World Cup the Chairman could not have assembled a group of more honest and committed people than Rashid, Miandad, Haroon and Sohail to put things right in the team. Yet things appear to have gone wrong. ** * This is soooooooooo very true
*
True, Rashid can be very stubborn, blunt and irrational at times, but let there be no confusion about the fact that he is totally committed to the good of Pakistan cricket and at this stage Pakistan cricket needs him at the helm of affairs.
He is the one who has encouraged the youngsters, introduced a culture of discipline and performance based selection in the team.
If he wrote a letter to the ICC recently on match fixing, he had his logical reasons and the less said about it the better. Rashid is nobody’s fool and achieved the target he wanted to achieve by raising the bogey of match-fixing with the ICC.
If he is angry with Sohail there are reasons for that also. All this can be sorted out in a rational manner - by sitting down together and discussing things out in a mature way.
But let not the Pakistan team or Pakistan cricket should be made the scapegoat over a few ego problems because the team is not the personal property of either Tauqir Zia, Aamer Sohail or even Rashid Latif.
It represents millions of Pakistanis so let us not take the masses for a ride again…
