I feel for you man!

Playing cricket in rain is ... devine!

It’s sad to hear that the joys of cricket are not known in the USA… you guys must have got the bad end of the deal when you got independent from us Brits!

Honestly!!! A nation without cricket!!! Unthinkable!!!

PS: It’s not too late for you guys to become part of Great Britain once more and to replace baseball with cricket!!!

ghc: cricket is a game similar to baseball .. eXcept playing it on four bases its played on 2 bases..(in the opposite direction of each other) .. the distance in the middle is called the 'pitch' , where the 'bowler' throws the ball, and the batsman (hitter) bats..

it has basic rules of getting 'out' like:
1. ball is caught by fielding team before it hits the ground once --> catch out
2. while hitting, part of batsman hits the 'wickets' (three wooden sticks behind batsman) --> hit-wicket..
3. while 'running' (making the runs/rounders), fielder hits the wickets with the ball and the batsman wasn't there yet (like outting the hitter in basebal by hitting him with the glove while having the possesion of the ball) .. --> run-out.
4. ball hits the wickets directly/indirectly (batsman failed to play it) --> bowled-out
5. batsman played the ball by going out of the 'safe' area (thought might hit the ball further) and wicket'keeper' caught the ball as batsman failed to analyze it and wicketkeeper did the "runout" kind of out .. --> stumped-out
6. ball hit the safety pads of the batsman on the leg or any other part of the body and it was in a line (meaning IF IT didn't, it was bowled) --> L.B.W out (Leg Before Wicket-Out)...
7. batsman played the ball TWICE (ball didn't touched the ground before the second hit came from batsman) --> Doublehit-out
8. one batsman was out, second one took more than 8-minutes to appear on the 'pitch' --> timeout-out.. (more info required on this one as this just came up to me thru a friend, not sure of its authenticity) ..

there is one more kind of 'out' which i cant remember at thispoint (i heard there were 9 rules basically) ..

scoring:

  • done by hitting the ball and running BETWEEN the pitch. each HALF round of the pitch is 1run..
  • batsman hit the ball with real power, and it went out of the boundry of the cricket ground (but touched the ground atleast once) --> 4 runs
  • hit that went out of the boundry without touching the ground --> 8 runs
  • bowler throwed a ball outside a GOOD playable area (called WIDE BALL) --> 1 EXTRA run, the attempt repeats again.
  • bowler either delievered the ball coming outside the 'throwing-line' or throwed a ball that took a height of batsman's shoulder-length or higher --> (called NO BALL) --> 1 EXTRA run, the attempt repeats again.
  • bowler throwed the ball, batsman didnt played it but it touched some part of the batsman body and either went out of boundryline or batsmen had time to run between wickets --> called LEG BYES (score depends upon the value of the runs or the boundry)
  • fielder received the ball from the batsman as a result of a hit, throwed it back towards the pitch and the fielders on THAT area failed to capture it, and batsmen had time to run OR the ball went out of the boundry because of this failure --> OVER THROW RUNS (value depends how much they ran or if it went outside boundry).. :)

thats about all i can think for the basic idea/rules of cricket GHC ..

Nice picture - rain and the plants. But cricket - boring!

Almost 2 dozen guys working their butts off for five days, to achieve no result…that truely is a great game !
