There is no concept of Chehlum in Islam...we adopted these rasams from Hindoisum.

The main reason is to gather and pray for the departed soul. Thats it.

But still no concept of it. When you read Quran you read it for yourself. Instead of Qurankhani and feeding many people who already have food in there houses, we should only feed to the needy and poor people only AND only in the name of Allah. After feeding poor you may ask Allah to forward His sawab to the deceased person. Now, it will be up to Allah what to do. Keep in mind that Allah is merciful and kind.
There is a reason that Allah made this excuse for us to feed poor and needy.
For a fact, Insan is very selfish and always looks for his/her benefit. Getting sawab is the benefit he/she is looking for (keeping in his mind the promise of the Jannah), and on the other side food is the only thing in poor person’s mind so that’s how all it balances.
What we do in this life, stays with us. We take only our Aamals with us.
