What are some good qualities you see in leaders, or think leaders should have…?

What are some of the mistakes you see leaders make?

Re: Good Leaders...

He should be confident, inspirational, have a drive and passion for his purpose, and good communication skills are key.

Re: Good Leaders...

He???

Be more specific - what are good communication skills?

Re: Good Leaders...

Sorry, as a desi woman I associate figures of authority with males.

(jest kidding!!)

He/she should communicate with their subordinates, in terms of ideas, wants, needs and treat them as individuals who are of value. He/she should be able to bring out the best in any person.

Re: Good Leaders...

First of all we need to distinguish between management and leadership although the two things have become inseparable for a good leader these days.
My favorite definition:
"While management aims to secure compliance with stated organizational objectives, leadership aims to secure willingness, enthusiasm and commitment. Leadership is the influential increment over and above mechanical compliance with the routine directives of the managment." (Katz and Kahn)
Leaders make variety of mistakes. What's a mistake for a bureaucratic leader may not be a mistake for a leader of a capital enterprise. Some mistakes are made because leaders lack ethical standards while others are made becasue leaders here can not lead. Leadership is thrust upon these people. In short if a leader is not taking the best course of action to achieve the stated organizational goals, he is making *some mistake. *

Re: Good Leaders…

SHE/he should never resort to profanity or name calling no matter how despicable the issue. Self-control and polite conversation works better than telling people to eff themselves.

Re: Good Leaders…

I think that’s ‘people’s management’ or management of personnel or human resouces in today’s world. which i think is leadership in today’s ‘civilized’ world.

Re: Good Leaders...

  1. Charisma
  2. Ability to maintain dedication after success and admiration.

Re: Good Leaders...

Any person who cannot work well as a subordinate or junior can never make a good leader...

A person who doesn't realize the importance of superiors in rank can never realize the value of his juniors or peers...

Re: Good Leaders...

An effective leader should have the ability to see the silver lining in any dark cloud. He/she should be able to show that lining to those around him/her and motivate them when they are discouraged.

He/she should be an excellent orator.....able to sway the masses.

He/she should be someone that can see the big picture yet at the very same time, understand and sympathize with the individual case.

He/she should be able to take criticism....regardless of the manner in which it is presented.

That's a few qualities that come to mind.
