The one hundred by M Heart is the best book you could start with.

It is a book about the one hundred most influential people in history and it is worth reading for anyone.

Even if you dont like history this is a book that you will at least find usefull in a day to day basis.

Edward Rutherfurd is a writer who writes historical novels which actually teach you something about real history. His book ‘London’ for example begins in times when it wasn’t a real town yet, then throughout history you read the stories of a few families and their children, grandchildren, etc. which enables you to learn something about customs of that time and political situation as well as religious situation and many other noteworthy topics of a certain area. An interesting journey through history while being entertained with nice or exciting stories. Fun way to learn about history.

For Russian history, i'd recommend - "A History of Modern Russia: From Nicholas II to Putin" by Robert Service

any period... just has to be good read
