Searching for your roots for some of us is a fascination with no bounds! I feel it something ingrained in me through genes or maybe a by product of studying history from young years.
Anyway, I wanted to know if any of you have gone back to India to visit the houses or places that used to be your forefathers before partition?! Where your parents went to school or have spent their childhood?
During my recent trip to NYC, I met with some of my extended family members who actually have visited back inside the Indian Punjab and the cities they lived in, the schools they went to & the people they left behind. Exploring the past we stayed up way past midnight talking about it! Funny how our old people have so much stamina when it comes to telling their stories. I miss my Nana jaan; he was a fun story teller!
My father and I are planning to take a trip to the Indian Punjab sometime in 2004 (InshAllah)
ahmed i have never gone back, my cousins have and brought back pictures and movies to share. I have met relatives from the indian side off and on, and have always thought about making a trip.
When i think of it i feel pretty sad because ma nana because of his responsibilities etc never got a chance to go back. By the time he reestablished himself and was able to go back, his siblings who had stayed back had all died. We tried to convince him to go later but he says "ab raha hi kya hai wahan dekhnay kay liye, raha hi kon hai milnay kay liye"
I hear such pain in those words. I bet millions of people were never able to see their friends, and family again.
I have never gone back myself, but my Grandparents visited their homes back in 1991. They took lots of pictures and stuff, but to be quiet honest, I'm not really intrested in my fore fathers homes and where they lived because I wouldn't know where to go, with my family being from all over.
Home for me is just my good old Pakistan and my lill city, where I was born. But I would love to go India one day Insha'allah.
