Golden Globes and Academy Awards should have a ‘Best Bollywood Film’ category
INDO-AMERICANS have asked Hollywood Foreign Press Association to introduce a new award category in the Golden Globes starting from 2011 – the Best Bollywood Film award, for films made in India.
Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada on Wednesday, December 16, said that India had the largest film industry in the world and thus it deserved at least one category in Golden Globes where its films could compete amongst themselves. This gesture would bring more respect to the Golden Globes in the international arena, where it is long overdue.
Rajan Zed, who is the chairperson of the Indo-American Leadership Confederation, further said that cinema in India, based in Mumbai and various regional centres, reportedly produced much more films and drew much larger audience globally than Hollywood (which released only 610 movies in 2008). It was unfair for such an influential cinema to not have its own category at Golden Globes. The best foreign language film award at Golden Globes did not do justice to such a large industry, Zed added.
Golden Globes recognise achievements in 25 categories - 14 in motion pictures and 11 in television. The 67th Annual Golden Globes will be held at Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on January 17. In the nominations announced on Tuesday, December 15, the yet to be commercially released Up in the Air about a frequent-traveler corporate downsizing expert, directed by Oscar nominated Jason Reitman and starring Oscar winner George Clooney was nominated in six categories.
