To OP:
Although things are not final, I assume that you’re in a position to talk to the guy (over phone, e-mail, chatting whatever). If you’re in a position to ask the guy for help…I strongly recommend you take that opportunity. But if you’re not in a position to communicate with the guy about this…the ignore that part of my “advice”.
