Your friend was right. If you have an Australian passport, you will get a 30-day visa on arrival automatically. If you’re Pakistani, you can’t leave the airport without a previously issued visa. But that visa is normally arranged for by the hotel, if you ask them to do it and send them your passport details, etc. at least 7 days in advance.
