What are the social situations where it could be acceptable for men to go commando? That’s my preference and wanted to get thoughts on its appropriateness.

Going commando is an acceptable personal choice, as no-one else needs to know you're doing it.
There are two rules on going commando though.
1) Do not advertise it to others.
2) Do not let your trousers ride low.

questions like these asked properly and addressed properly are perfectly fine in my opinion. How else will people know when it is okay and when it is not.
My take on it is that discretion is most important. Only you should know it and others should not be able to tell.
so factors like how fitted the clothes are, colour, place will matter.
oh sorry, and discretion is the second most important thing, personal safety is first.. I suppose the zippers on jeans can do a number on you otherwise..

It is acceptable when no one knows about it or no one can find out about it easily in any setting ...
When people may suspect it ... it is only socially acceptable then when:
In Scotland wearing the kilt
In some rural place wearing a dhoti i.e. not infront of people
In your home either in your courtyard or on the roof, but make sure it is not windy or going to rain.
I'm not sure it is socially acceptable to talk about it though, but I have tried to be as accurate yet as inuendo free as possible.
