With this years British Conker Championships fast approaching, I honestly thought this was childsplay. I heard the annual event attracts between 4-5 thousand people, and last years champion conker was sold for a record £300 (about $500 I think).
I remember the children gathering around in cold autumn playgrounds, displaying their prize conkers and competing fiercely to smash the challenging conker to blitherines. This was a game of no halves and quarters where great respect could be earned amongst peers.
Is this game only played in the UK and Ireland, or has anyone else experienced playing conkers? Or perhaps it’s called something else in other regions of the world.
