God's name in Vain [split]

:k: Great choice of words to use in a religion forum. I suppose since Jesus isn’t “Jesus Christ” in your religion you don’t feel as though are you using a using a religous figure’s name in vain.

Re: ~! What should one do, when his/her parents are oppressive?

if u know PCG you would know that she operates in a culturally normal way in US and saying Jesus Christ like that is a norm.

Re: ~! What should one do, when his/her parents are oppressive?

And so are other insulting and blasphemous words, but i don't think they are acceptable is a religious forum either. It's not the norm for folks who hold religion dear.

Re: ~! What should one do, when his/her parents are oppressive?

Here's a relevant example...

I grew up in a very secular household where "GD" and "JC" were commonly used. When I became involved with religion and developed spiritually I became aware of how blasphemous that language was and will not allow my parents to use those words in my house and continually encourage them to choose other expletives to use.

Re: ~! What should one do, when his/her parents are oppressive?

The concept of taking a name in vain does not apply in Islam i dont think. Folks say stuff like ya Allah! or hai Allah; in the same manner and its generally acceptable; hence they dont not really come across as a form of insult to most...

Re: ~! What should one do, when his/her parents are oppressive?

I am not a big fan of using expletives period, I mean I have used them and do use them but try to limit them.

as far as the religion forum goes, I respect your opinion and would request that PCG edit it to respect your feelings.

I also hope that similar actions are taken in religion forum in general because I myself have read many things uttered that I consider blasphemous.

Re: ~! What should one do, when his/her parents are oppressive?

Learn something new everyday. I didn't realize the concept of taking a religious figure's name in vain was different in Islam.

Let's face it - even though it is insulting to many - it is very commonly used in America and what am I gonna do, spend my whole day chastizing everyone I see? Perhaps I am oversly sensitive today.

And Mr F you are right, there is probably something blasphemous to someone being said all the time here. And I could be an even bigger culprirt.

Sorry, I retract my whining.

Re: ~! What should one do, when his/her parents are oppressive?

seminole u have a valid point, no need to retract it.
th concept of taking a religious figure's name in vain is identical in islam, it is not appreciated.

It is to be used as a wish for help, sadly many people take it too far and it has become as acceptable culturally in countries like Pakistan as using Jesus' name has become acceptable in US.

but it doe snot make it right.

Re: God's name in Vain [split]

God doesn't mind us taking his name.. in fact He tells us to call Him by any good name ... cuz all good names belong to Him.

I mean how is it respectful to abbreviate someone's name? Am I being respectful calling Jesus the Son of Mary, JC? he wasn't my pal.. he was an honorable messenger.

I've never understood this G_d thing with the Jews..

Re: God's name in Vain [split]

Saying his name out of respect is totally different.

I don't understand how some 'pious' followers will kill or advocating killing someone who draws a mere cartoon of a religious figure, so minimizing the insult a Christian or Jew may feel for his beliefs is a little off base.

Re: God's name in Vain [split]

agreed, saying the namw out of respect is baseless, and ppl doing it sometimes really annoys me, the worst one being with the name of chirst being taken with an expletive in the middle..I mean what kind of crude behavior is that.

I am in agreement with Seminole on this..even if it is common practice among some ppl, its offesnsive to many.

I recall a thread just recently about ppl gtting offended because the words allah or ali or kamli wala referring to the prophet were used in some Bollywood songs with rather raunchy videos etc. that was offensive to many also.

this is similar.

Re: God's name in Vain [split]

So, I signed on just now to find a PM saying that my comment was removed from the thread. I actually had no problem with that, nor was I planning on retaliating or anything. You know why? Because I know with what intention I say "Jesus Christ!", or "Ya Allah!", etc. Does it mean that I don't respect these figures or God? No.

Just like you expect tolerance for your beliefs, tolerate the fact that not everyone will think like you.

Re: God's name in Vain [split]

Interesting. I had no idea the term used could be offensive.

I agree such terms should be removed, as it is offensive to others.

Re: God's name in Vain [split]

discuss religion.. not followers..
