The only way out is for 3 automakers to go bank corrupt. Top management gets kicked out, UAW contracts voided. Keep the good parts worldwide and shut down the rest.
After 1973, the auto makers got their warning. They knew that oil would have volatile pricing. They could see VW making efficient cars with the Rabbit, Mercedes making efficient but large diesels. Honda had the CVCC stratified charge engine that made the Civic a 45 mpg efficiency and accelerated faster than the "Mustang II".
In 1980 there was another oil shock. Did they learn? No. They kept on making drab cars sharing the same chassis like the Cady, Buick, etc. As soon as the oil prices moderated, they came up with the gas hogs like Expedition, Escalade, etc.
I can not believe how Rick Wagoner had the nerve to collect $28M last year while the company was loosing $Bs. What does he know about cars anyway? Nothing but another MBA from Harvard. Probably could not change the oil of a Vette. UAW is no better... blood sucking, even though they knew for a long time that their contracts would wipe the company.
Time for America to let capitalism sweep these inefficient companies into the dustbin of history.
they are mostly in a mess of their own doing, yes the economy is doing a number on them but its not like they were all hunky dory before that anyways.
poor designs and bad products were the doing of the mgmt/professional staff
but on the other hand UAW had things like jobbank...anyone know what that is? and how many people the entire auto industry had to support thsi way..its unbelieveable
Re: GM to slash up 31,500
good. they make rubbish anyway.
Re: GM to slash up 31,500
no company can do well with the type of retirement plans and job-bank stuff (paying tens of thousands of workers to not work basically)
Re: GM to slash up 31,500
^ what's your profession, if you don't mind me asking?
add to that, their wise decsion of taking major portion of all the jobs to India/China/Mexico.
You take away my job and give it to someone sitting in Bangalore but you expect me to go and buy your vehicle .. how crazy is that idea.
You take out jobs, you take out money from local economy and you take out customer loyalty. No wonder your products failed to attract customers so miserably.
Then GM’s stupid decision to increase their footrpint by owning more brand names, look at this list
Buick
Cadillac
Chevrolet
GMC
GM Daewoo
Holden
HUMMER
Oldsmobile
Opel
Pontiac
Saab
Saturn
Vauxhall
Some of those brands are now huge liability on the company. Some of you probably remember that GM had to pay 2 billion dollars to get out of deal that they made with Fiat to buy that company. You cant even make a decent Saturn but you want to go out and own Opel and Daewoo.
Someone needs to fire Rick Wagoner

Re: GM to slash up 31,500
for god's sake desert bird, create a diff thread title it as some sort of stories of economic challenges in US and post the links.
really. please.
mods otherwise can you do it, all these links irrelevent to the topic are rather annoying. cant have a proper discussion
Re: GM to slash up 31,500
Actually the thread was started to keep in touch with the global recession and its impact on banks ,corporates and multi-nationals and thier jobs volume reduction not of US only but across the world like Sony, Woolworths etc just like 'watch out' thread of this forum was about the daily developments of stock exchanges of the world. Since i started it with GM so thread was titled with it otherwise its not only about big 3 but about all giants of financial sector. MODs can split the thread if they feel so.
Re: GM to slash up 31,500
so your intention for this is what, i dont see a discussion. in the watchout thread the posters had an opinion. just posting links and the headline does what?
Re: GM to slash up 31,500
No one discussed the topic despite i posted several links. Aji Pir Sahab , its better for me to stop posting links than to give my persnal opinions. Then you people would declare me as economically encapsulated, narrow minded, fundamentalist,Zaid Hamid Jr. , Anti-Semite,pro-taliban ,cave era mentality etc etc.
