Gluten-Free

Who here is gluten-free or following a gluten free program?

Re: Gluten-Free

iv been told by my gp to follow a gluten-free diet, but have been struggling the past three months!! i have to cut out all food containing wheat/gluten.. i tried making chappati's with gluten-free flour but they turned out horrible, doesnt taste nice..and gluten free bread/pasta tastes yuck too and gave me stomach cramps. ..i can only handle boiled rice with curry but its not as filling as alternative to chappatti.... im running out of motivation sticking to this diet as im the only one in the family suffering from it... i need some tips on how to manage my daily diet..iv tried googling it, but cant find anyone who's asian& coeliec.

Re: Gluten-Free

fullstop, why did your doc tell you to go gluten-free?

Re: Gluten-Free

Have you tried eliminating chapati completely?

Re: Gluten-Free

Gluten-free = Glutton-free. :D

Replace chapaati (carbs) with loads of above-ground veggies.

Re: Gluten-Free

why would you replace one food group with another? replace roti with chawal or a roti made out of corn (makkai), besan, bajra, jowar.. the possibilities are endless even while staying within the domain of desi foods.

Re: Gluten-Free

i tried eliminating roti for 2 weeks, i was feeling really run-down and un-energetic every single day..i subsituted chappati with boiled rice with curry and steamed vegetables on the side, for 14 days.... i was diagnosed with coeliec thru a blood test as i was feeling really unwell n had ibs symptoms n wasnt putting on weight. so gp thought it cud be coeliec. when i was diagnosed, i was told to completely change my diet, but have been struggling since.. i just dont get the feel full factor from anything else other than wheat flour chappati..other rotis made from besan/ makkai/ bajra/jowar are either so hard to make or they just taste horrible. :(

Re: Gluten-Free

According to the upside down food pyramid, carbs should be the lowest consumed food group. Eliminate grains from your diet. Latest resurch.

Re: Gluten-Free

fullstop -

You will have to make some changes no matter how hard they are. You do have to change your diet and learn to incorporate more protein, veggies, etc.

The nice thing is, once you make an effort and get used to it…you don’t even feel the need for the typical roti.

There are a billion and one recipes on Pinterest that are yummy and healthy.

Have you tried this one: Jules Gluten Free All Purpose Flour - No Compromise

Re: Gluten-Free

too bad CDG doesn't post anymore, the upside down pyramid etc. are the devil's tools. eat like a human.

Re: Gluten-Free

The percentage of gluten in wheat has increased many-fold in the last 50 years.

Today's wheat is not the wheat our elders consumed.

In side news, ghee, olive and coconut oil are the new healthy oils. Vegetable oil like soybean/corn is baaaaad. On ghee, our ancestors were right on.

Also in side news, 90% of soy production in the world is genetically modified. Again, baaaad. Corn ... baaaad.

Re: Gluten-Free

Edit. Let me add about carbs - they should be the lowest consumed food group, unless you are a hard-core athlete.

Re: Gluten-Free

You can get gluten free pitta bread and naan from most supermarkets. It will take time for u to acquire the different taste and texture of gluten free products.

There's also a lot of variety of pastas, biscuits and breads and pizza bases now available.

Re: Gluten-Free

But check ingredients for other bad stuff they may be adding to make it appetizing, like sugar and extra calories.

Today was almost my first gluten free day but it forces you to read label and my morning cup of tea was so lonely today. I usually have a toast but my eczema has flared up and I figured why not go gluten free to see if it helps. My morning toast was replaced by a moong dal chila/crepe. It was actually good.

Going gluten free makes some people gain weight so I am a bit worried about that. I am upping my fiber thru fruits and veggies. Upping my dal and I plan on adding greens to any daal. If you are on a gluten free diet, any suggestions on how to make it a little easier. Meal ideas or plans would be appreciated.

Re: Gluten-Free

Yeh, eat like a human. If people were eating and having the the same activity level as a generation or two ago there wouldn’t be a problem. People consume too many calories and eat carbs beyond the level their bodies require for the activity they do.

Re: Gluten-Free

Just an update, since following the gluten free diet …I had a blood test to see if there’s any difference, last may 2013 my anti Ttg levels were 17 and now may 2014 its dropped down to 0.3, doctor was shocked to see such a significant impact as i actually stuck strictly to the diet for only 6 weeks prior to my blood test this year, omg!! Pleased that i finally know this diet has worked but unfortunately not pleased as doctor said i have to stick to gluten free diet for life, it’s a life term sentence!! I wasnt expecting to hear that, i thought once my results became normal i would be able to eat my mums homemade normal wheat atta roti again (that I really crave for ) , my symptoms haven’t improved though ,as i still feel tired all the time n upset stomach sometimes but doctor advised i take them nutritional milk shakes to help absorb some extra vitamins n protein …It’s been a massive struggle but i got through it Alhamdulillah.
