Western culture is not a tribal or feudal culture and more individualistic it is not a culture where corrupt politicians and govt officials steal billions of dollars from the starving and deprived so that their own children may live like royalties. Respect and love for family is not ordained but earned thru actions, unlike many cultures where abusive horrible parents still command respect and obedience, here if you are abusive you will be called out. Lewis was abusive and unfaithful and his children called him out on it and they did not have a relationship with each other. However their mother did get a financial settlement at her divorce.
Many billionaires have left most of their wealth to Charity also, Bill gates and Buffet will leave most wealth to Charity and I believe Zuckerberg also.
What is happening to Rohingyas and the apathy muslims are showing towards them and how some Hindus like @queer are justifying and revelling in their plight would be a more appropriate reference towards empathy or the lack of it thereof.
I am not a fan of lack of family commitments and bonds, this is where I take a completely different path but again I still believe that after 18 I owe my children nothing, all three of my children started jobs early and the best thing for them is not inheritance but raising them to make their own living and be psychologically and emotionally independent and have the capacity to be happy.

OP, remember the cheesy movie, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? It had Johnny Lever in a yet another dorky “comic” role. This time he was obsessed with the Queen of England whom he swore allegiance to every day and even called her “Mummmmmyyyyy” (in a fobby accent) fancied himself a Gora and turned his nose up at all the other Brown characters and their Brown ways. :halo:

Sir, I do know about the Islamic jurisprudence about inheritance but this is a secular society and laws here are secular too. Here the society will look after children and elders also so family does not have the same burden of responsibility. Furthermore I know of countless cases in Pak where family members stole the share of inheritance from each other and there is generational feuds about property so the lack of empathy more applies to stealing the inheritance. Western laws give adults a lot of freedom of choice. It gave the children the right to protest about his parenting and it gave him the right to give his money to whoever. Billions of dollars are also willed to charity and a lot collected as death tax too.
If the mom got a divorce settlement and children broke contact with him and didn’t like him, respect him or cared for him then do you think the law should force him.
