Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Pakistan does allow dual-citizenship. With NADRA NICOP etc its too easy to go manage Pakistani stuff even from sitting outside. I wonder in what circumstances would a Pakistani decide to give up his citizenship.

One thing I’m aware of is that if you try to take Indian visa on some other Passport, they first ask to give up Pakistani nationality, take a certificate from Pakistani Embassy and they get Indian visa.

Nevertheless, dont think its such a “worrying” sign. Wut matters more is that there shouldnt be any bad conditions within the country itself for people who chose to be a Pakistani.

**ISLAMABAD: **More than 3,400 Pakistani citizens have renounced their nationality in the last five years after adopting the citizenship of other countries while another 1,500 want to give up their association with the homeland.

Around 251 Pakistanis have adopted the nationality of Canada, 171 of the United States, 145 of Australia, 121 of New Zealand, 75 of Norway while 54 chose to become citizens of Denmark. The rest went for the citizenship of other countries in Europe and the Middle East, immigration officials told The Express Tribune.
“The 3,400 cases of renunciation of Pakistani nationality have been successfully handled,” writes Immigration & Passport Director-General Muhammad Safdar in a progress report submitted to the interior ministry.
Around 1,534 applications of Pakistanis, who want to renounce their citizenship, are in process currently while 141 cases of citizenship registration pending for many years have been also decided.
The immigration officials said over 5,000 Afghan refugees had also applied for the citizenship of Pakistan. Another 117 applications from foreign women married to Pakistani nationals are being processed at regional passport offices across Pakistan.
“Afghan refugees’ applications are being considered,” a senior immigration officer said. “We have also contacted the top registration body accordingly.”
The applications have been referred to the departments concerned for verification and will be finalised after completion of the required aggregate stay in Pakistan.
The citizenship renunciation applications come despite Pakistan’s dual-nationality arrangements with 16 countries: the United Kingdom, Egypt, France, Jordan, Italy, Syria, Belgium, Switzerland, Iceland, Netherlands, Australia, United States, New Zealand, Sweden, Canada and Ireland.
Apart from these figures, the country produced over 26,000 registered asylum seekers last year – the highest number on record at the United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). Pakistan currently ranks sixth among the 44 industrialised countries with the most asylum seekers, according to the UNHCR.
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USICS) and Department of Homeland Security data reveals that 4,113 asylum applications of Pakistanis were received between 2002 and 2014. Around 1,736 applications were approved, 115 were denied while 1,742 were “adjudicated referred”, which means cases that the USICS cannot approve.
“Such cases are referred to the federal immigration courts, where a judge makes the final determination on their eligibility,” Tim Counts, the USCIS spokesperson, had told The Express Tribune last year.

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Adnan Sami is very keen in getting Indian Citizenship… :hmmm:

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

I think he’s already an indian citizen now

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

No, he doesn’t. He applied Indian Citizenship, and his case is still pending.

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Nah. What do I get out of renouncing my Pakistani citizenship?

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Fawad Khan will apply too

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Because they want dual citizenship of other countries. Like the spouse’s citizenship to make life easier for travel and stuff.

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

middle east? I thought those guys didn’t give you citizenship?

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Wasn’t he a Canadian citizen (and not a Pak citizen) in the first place ?

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Unless it’s a country with which Pakistan does not have dual nationality agreement, there is really no need to renounce it.
Best to keep it, you never know. Because Life happens…if they take it all away you will still be able to take out your Pakistani passport and take a flight to Pak. (having valid nicop means you can apply pak passport!).

Other passports do make travel a lot easier. I now travel exclusively on my Canadian ppt as it’s visa-free to Schengen/EU, USA, etc. And for travel to Pak I use Canadian passport + NICOP. Traveling is a lot easier when you have a western country’s passport. Easy for airlines, easy for transit/transfer, etc. Pakistani passport has a lot of restrictions (needs a visa even for transit in EU, etc unless you have western residency)

One thing i don’t want to happen is for Afghans to get Pakistani nationality. They hate Pakistan so we should send them back to their homeland and they should go get their afghani passports there! No more brotherhood and no more favours, go back if you don’t like Pakistan. Go find another country to call home

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Lol at making such a big fuss over 3400 people renouncing their citizenship. Just another 200 million to go…:smokin:

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

At least those people are not hypocrites. They left pakistan and pledged allegiance to a foreign land. Rightfully left Pakistani citizenship too. Unlike others who keep pakistani citizenship for convienicne only.

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Yes if you have dual passports and want an indian visa, India demands a renunciation certificate from Pakistanis that they have given up pakistani citizenship. so if you have only Pakistani passport, that is fine but if you have a usa passport and still keeps the pakistani citizenship, you need to produce the certificate that you have given up on pakistani citizenship…for what? to go to india? lol what stupidity.

apparently Indians started doing this after david headly who was a pakistani born usa citizen was able to sneak into india before 911 on his usa passport without any problem and gave some critical logisticinfo to 911 terrorists…at least that is what indians claim.

Them 3400 peoplaan took peer Gilani seriously:hehe:

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Is this only for dual passport pakistanis applying for Indian Visa or any Pakistani applying for Indian visa?

Re: Giving up Pakistani Citizenship??

Maybe Indian Govt’s toxic policies are a result of the fear that Pakistanis passing through India will find out how the call centers are run, and that’ll be the end of that. I kid. It’s probably not that, at all.

For a lot of folks who themselves, or whose families migrated from Pakistan have in one way or another resulted in diminishing of the connections to the once-homeland, and the only connection that remains is the in paper trail of Pakistani citizenship (dual citizenship with residing country in most cases). So it really would depend on the person’s longing to maintain any ties with Pakistan. Migrating out of the country may be a necessity due to various reasons at various times in history, but giving up citizenship is a purely logistical decision for those who do renounce it, that’s just my opinion; people have personal reason for and against it.
