There is a fundamental logical reason why all that happened in past so often and is not as obvious in current times.
The major difference is that wrath of Allah:swt: came to the nations when they disobeyed their Prophets, Messengers to be exact, while prophets were among them.
The final prophet has already come and went away from this world and no new prophet is to come now. The wrath of ALLAH:swt: always destroyed that very nation. This will not happen now for this human race is to live till the Judgement day. Small punishments do come every now and then through many mediums… some times the medium is sunami, other times it can be airplanes… Allah:swt: also punishes His believers who disobey Him with the hand of unbelievers… He is Almighty and I do not see any argument necessary for why it can or can not happen.
If One believe in Quran, one must believe in the context of Quran as well.
