The re-emergence of the Taliban is threatening one of Afghanistan’s greatest achievements in the post-Taliban era: education. Female students, whom the Taliban denounces as un-Islamic, are at greatest risk. Their teachers are kidnapped and killed. Their classrooms are torched. Their parents are threatened.
In the southern Afghan province of Helmand, the Taliban is waging war not only on foreign and Afghan troops, but on education. Of 224 schools that opened after the Taliban fell, at least 90 have been forced to close because of threats and attack — especially schools that teach girls.
The only remaining schools for girls are in the provincial capital Lashkargah, where the principal of one school, Jamila Niazi, says she endures repeated threats to her life.
But the girls and teachers keep coming — 6,000 of them to Niazi’s school alone — saying it’s worth the risk.
District schools supervisor Sayed Gol says intimidation and threats remain rare in Lashkargah. But he says he fears that may not last long.
He complains that so far, NATO’s month-old Operation Achilles has caused more schools to close, due to the fighting, but also because the Taliban returns to villages and towns after Western and Afghan troops leave.
“We are unhappy with this campaign,” Gol says. “It’s had no effect other than to make things worse.”
Gol says he hopes that the troops will speed up their efforts. But Dutch Gen. Ton van Loon, the NATO commander in charge of the troops, said at a news conference late last month that they are acting cautiously to ensure Afghan civilians are not caught in the crossfire.
For their part, Taliban spokesmen insist they are not targeting any Afghan schools.

UNFPA looks for more funds to support Afghan women
KABUL, March 3 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Population Fund for Afghanistan (UNFPA) which currently has 5 million U.S. dollars for supporting women in Afghanistan is looking for more funds, according to country representative of the body on Monday.
"Our current budget this year is approximately 5 million U.S. dollars and we are looking forward to significantly increase it," Ramesh Penumaka, country representative of the UNFPA, told newsmen at a press conference here.
He also said that objective of the body is to foster women empowerment and gender equity in the war-torn country.
Meanwhile, the official acknowledged the improvement of women rights in the country.
A report issued by the integrity said that out of 23.6 million of Afghanistan 48.9 percent is female.
Women represent 27 percent of the post-Taliban country's National Assembly (68 out of 249 seats in Wolesi Jirga or Lower House and 23 out of 102 in Mushrano Jirga or Upper House of parliament).
Nevertheless, UNFPA admitted that forced marriage as a big problem of women in Afghanistan, and many Afghan girls are married before completing the age of 18.
Moreover, maternal mortality rate in Afghanistan is still high as one woman, according to Penumaka dies every 29 minutes due to reproductive health related complications (1,600 to 1,900 deaths per 100,000 live births, the second highest maternal mortality rate in the world).
YOU GOT CHANGE, DONATE.:)
Re: GIRLS SCHOOL STILL UNDER THREAT IN AFGHANISTAN
Ahaan, so in one thread, they are gone and music and "life" is returned to Afghanistan. In another they return to burn down schools...only to run away again?
May Allah guide us.
Re: GIRLS SCHOOL STILL UNDER THREAT IN AFGHANISTAN
Unfortunately , Taliban don't were uniforms. They hide and regroup. Just today they bombed the second Cell Tower.
Sadly, many hide in Pakistan where they are given refuge.

I find this thead weak in substance because of them coming back and running away, and power fluctuating as such.
Girls should definitely be educated.
And no one said they werent, Yvonne ridley was kept in a school for girls, (in the hostel of it) when Americans started carpet bombing Afghanistan.
Many afghani women can speak better english than I can. From under their burqas, you can find tons of interviews online.
Re: GIRLS SCHOOL STILL UNDER THREAT IN AFGHANISTAN
^^ ok good
but what about them running government, becoming ministers?
or do u feel a woman's place is in the home?
and doesn't this contradict what the Taliban says?
Re: GIRLS SCHOOL STILL UNDER THREAT IN AFGHANISTAN
Alright calm it everyone. Cool down please :)
So, why is Girls School still under threat? Haven't the Karzai Govt. already taken over most of the populated territories?

Re: GIRLS SCHOOL STILL UNDER THREAT IN AFGHANISTAN
Education for women fosters self-confidence, self-reliance , independent thought and free will. Is this feminism?
Men may fear or distrust "feminism" if they think it means nothing more than women gaining control over them. But genuine women's liberation would be liberating for all people, men and women alike. Not an issue of who wields power over whom, but transcending that whole issue of power, lifting our consciousness to a higher plane. A woman who is truly liberated would not be stuck in that old power struggle; she would not seek to control men any more than she would accept being controlled by men. Rather, both men and women would rejoice at being freed to relate to one another as loving, spiritual beings. This is real, and most of all the Sufis have actualized it. This is what the Prophet (peace be upon him) brought, if only that original liberating spirit could be released from under the dead weight of centuries of cultural repression like "purdah", which came not from Islam, but from the concubinage of the ancient Greeks and Romans, where women had no rights and were property owned by their fathers, husbands, and slave masters, so it is nothing but jâhilîyah pretending to be Islam, while Islam established the independent, equal status of women for the first time in civilization.
Why is it that I have noticed in forums if Muslims call attention to systemic injustice against women in Muslim countries, they are likely to get attacked and accused of supporting kufr against Islam or similar inference?
If some of us protest injustice that is being done in the name of Islam, that is because we love Islam and hate to see its good name being misused as a cover for oppression that is completely contrary to the spirit of Islam. Muslims have to clean up their own act, and insisting on denial of a problem is no service to the ummah. The injustice against women perpetrated by the system of power is very real. Willful blindness to the problem is no excuse for going along with it. If you really care about the essence of Islam, you need to establish justice. The injustice against women in Muslim countries is terrible, and there has been more than enough pious preaching about how Islam is great for women (in an ideal world), and not enough correcting of injustice on the ground. The evil comes from the system that keeps people locked in roles that stunt their growth, the system that unjustly penalizes women who would exercise their rights. As long as it isn't happening to someone you know, it's easy to stay complacent and acquiesce with the conventional system, overlooking its injustice. There has been more than enough (merely verbal) assertion that Islam is good for women. Indeed, true Islam would be good for women, if it were ever implemented properly! There has to be an end to the denial and more attention to the very real injustices that Muslim women are suffering right now. Why are girls left uneducated? What about access to medical treatment? Why are rape victims in Pakistan jailed or murdered while rapists go free? Why do those vicious thugs, the Taliban, think they can get away with beating and confining women? The situation is compounded by the pretense that "Islam" can somehow be the justification for harming women. Is this not slanderous
And to give even slight defence to Taliban is initself abhorrent and vile of any decent muslim . You should be angry at what has been done to women and not give pitiful excuses on how come they keep coming back under Karzai. Maybe if Pakistan wasn't giving them safe haven , ISAF could have most of them annihilated. Perhaps ISAF should have gone after them in Pakistan and to heck with Musharraf's double stance

Re: GIRLS SCHOOL STILL UNDER THREAT IN AFGHANISTAN
Sorry to post it here. My first choice was the thread on woman authorized to perform marriages in Egypt except I couldn’t find the thread.
Now, if you are a US citizen, please sign a petition to repeal the International Marriage Broker Act (IMBRA) of 2005? Here’s the link: http://new.petitiononline.com/imbra05/petition.html
IMBRA requires that an international broker to not provide contact or general information on a foreign woman to an American man unless that broker first collects and discloses to the woman the following information about the man before a man can even say first hello to a woman:
-
Every state of residence since the age of 18;
-
Current or previous marriages as well as how and when they terminated;
-
Information on children under 18;
-
Any arrest or conviction related to controlled substances, alcohol or prostitution, making no distinction on arrests not leading to conviction;
-
Any court orders, including temporary restraining orders, which are notoriously easy to procure;
-
Any arrest or conviction for crimes ranging from homicide to child neglect;
-
Any arrest or conviction for "similar activity in violation of Federal, State or local criminal law without specifying what “similar” means.
Re: GIRLS SCHOOL STILL UNDER THREAT IN AFGHANISTAN
Food, medicine and basic needs of society are more important for Afghanis at this stage than a school which is being used as a propaganda tool against the Taliban...
These people need basic amenities first...What good is a child who has education but is dying for lack of basic infrastructure...
Re: GIRLS SCHOOL STILL UNDER THREAT IN AFGHANISTAN
^That's an excellent idea. All women should know the background of a man they plan to marry, Most of these foreign women are looking for the immigration card anyways to get out of the 'hole' of poverty, subjugation or are seeking a better life and don't really care who the man is as long as he doesn't kill them before the immigration mandated support expires /
I have seen great looking women marry truly ugly north americans, fat ones too (gross) and then after the immigration terms have been fully honored leave them in the dust. Men from other countries woo western women also.
Recently , there was quite the documentary on Indian men from the west having gone home to marry Indian women and having recieved huge dowries. The men return to the west and ask for more money from Indian inlaws to start business and while wife is in India waiting for immigration papers up to two years they then find out guy has recieved divorce from them and dowry money is gone.
I know one fellow who married a Pakistani woman and brought her here. The poor girl was a stunner but he was quite the jerk to her treated her like a cook, cleaner etc , old fashioned and tempermental, needless to say she tolerated him long enough and finally got the help from a girlfriend of mine and the ability to leave him and now lives a nice life in the west.

Well if you feel this way lets stop teaching the male students altogether also if they plan to grow up to be Taliban or of same mentality.
She is a child today, In ten years when medicine and basic needs of society are better for aFGHANIS the she will have the education to puruse her rights and independence. It doesn't happen over night but it will. It's not too good to have a populace fat on food with empty brains either.
WOmen will be EQUALS. My muslimah sisters and I will see to it. Some of us are already there teaching the young ladies in preparation of a future.
The taliban are fools who will be annihilated even at the hand of a woman. Teaching a woman how to shoot, physical defense and arts, literature, music, theatre, philosophy, science , maths is al part of the slow but forward moving curriculum.
