Girls and Women Terrorized by Widespread Rape in Darfur

Many have fled to the neighboring country Chad where refuge camps are thankful protect by the French army in order to avoid being ganged raped which is sadly common in Darfur.

UNICEF has received further reports that armed militias are continuing to rape girls and women in Darfur as a tactic to terrorize and humiliate individuals and communities.

Assaults are indiscriminate - young girls and old women are equal targets - and there are no reports of the attackers being punished, says UNICEF Child Protection Officer Pamela Shifman, who has just returned from the region. “Over and over again, girl after girl, woman after woman, said the same thing: The biggest problem they are facing is security and they have tremendous fear about their safety and a terrible fear about sexual violence.”

Many of those she spoke to had been assaulted by militia groups who use rape and sexual violence as a form of punishment and torture. This has a devastating effect on individuals and instils fear and shame within communities. Families and children are sometimes forced to watch.

The rape and violence continues around the camps as women and children go out to collect water and firewood. Even though they are vulnerable to attack, they have to perform these tasks to survive.

“They’re in a situation where they need to get the firewood, they need to go out of the camp, they need to walk - many of them six or eight hours a day - in order to collect the firewood. And yet they know that journey is a treacherous one and that they face the very real and terrifying prospect of sexual violence,” says Ms. Shifman.

“Right now there is no protective environment for the children of Darfur. In particular, the girls that I spoke with did not feel safe - they did not have the basic sense of security that they need to thrive. The basic need to feel safe and secure is not being met.”

None of the people Ms. Shifman spoke with knew of any instances where an attacker had been punished or brought to justice for his crimes. “The perpetrators must be held accountable. There are Sudanese laws against rape and there are Sudanese courts, and they have to be used,” says Ms. Shifman.

Other reports indicate that the overall security situation has worsened and that the April cease-fire has broken down. Some 70,000 people have died in Darfur from hunger and disease and a further 1.5 million have fled their homes since conflict began in February last year.

And yesterday, 4 countries voted against a proposed language of a UN Resolution to impose sanctions on Sudan. These 4 countries are Russia, China, Algeria, and guess what? Pakistan.

The whole Ummah and Arabobo Matoo should die with shame. Iraq Iraq Iraq brotherhood brotherhood brotherhood… where is brotherhood for poor blacks? Die terrorist die!

It’s so amusing that all [Edited] are quiet on this issue but can’t stop talking about Iraq and bullcrap garbage against the United States of Amrika.

:jhanda:

and how would sanctions be helpful? starve the malnourished?

One Jihad at a time, brother.

:jazak:

I think most people are unaware of the gravity of the crises in that part. Sudan has a civil war going on for the past 22 years, but this Darfur crises is relatively recent. In all honesty, it is the worst genocidal crises that can be easily controlled, but everyone is doing nothing to stop it. Black blood is cheap.

^ True. It is sickening to see the suffering of these people and the Sudanese police carrying out their shameful acts right in front of UN representatives who are powerless to stop it. Someone needs to step in and stop this madness. These poor people are suffering no end.

'it is the worst genocidal crises that can be easily controlled, but everyone is doing nothing to stop it. '

How can it be controlled? Is UN totally helpless? Last i heard the UN had reached some sort of deal, though i dont know what kind.

Mama Mooli.. yes, it can be controlled. All they need is a few thousand strong African peacekeepers. It’s not that Sudanese are fighting with tanks or bombs…they are killing with sticks and axes.

^ so what is stoppin the UN to send them over?

Anyway, they just passed a resolution today, to end the civil war, and pakistan agreed to it this time around.

there is no genocide in Darfur. Conditions in kashmir, chechnya, palestine are most probably far worst!

I find it interesting the US is'nt doig anything about this crisis. Whats wrong, no oil in Darfur? not strategically placed next to Isreal?
Don't the Christian Fundamentalist terrorists who run the US have any interest in Sudan?

Is the security council serious about darfur? According to the new resolution, the government wont be held accountable at all for any human rights abuses, and nor will they be asked to prosecute any janjaweed militia.

and all Jack straw had to say on the issue was that although he agreed there should have been a stonger resolution, showing unity on an issue is even more important, (???) and so they decided to agree with the lame decision. somethings just not right here…i dont know what..

The U.S. looks after its interest, that is nothing surprising, but why don't Muslims look after their own interests?

Shame on you people for shedding crocodile tears for Darfur when in fact you are merely using it as a poster child to put down Muslims. Hypocrites. What have you done for Darfur? Or you think opening a couple of threads is enough?

Is the shame equal to those who only open threads to put down America? What have you done for Iraq, or do you think opening 2200 threads is enough? What is wrong discussing the genocide in Darfur, many hundreds of thouands more have died here than in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. Hypocrite.

Why are you two always bickering?

How useful would sanctions be?
