I am trying to arrange a trip for my danish friends to LAhore for BAsnat. Lahore I know pretty much well inside out. Flying with PIA we all are getting a free fare whithin Pakistan free. I am thinking of takig them all to GILGIT :).,
Now IS there anyone that has been 2 GIlgit ? How long should we keep our stay ? How far are the good places from Gilgit airport ? Are there good cheap hotels ? any information would be helpful

Mid - Feb you'll probably find snow there, so go prepared. Lovely place; why not extend to Hunza - take a car / jeep with driver from Gilgit, stay at the PTDC hotels - clean and reasonably efficient and priced.
Let us know what you decide and how it goes.
I went to Gilgit by air (booked the entire plane as alot of relatives went), and we had to take a PIA guy with us, just to make sure we get return tickets when we get there...
there are a couple of good travel agencies in islamabad arranging trips to the north - gilgit and skardu
theres not much in gilgit - you have to jeep it out to Hunza and beyond , about 3 hours from gilgit - good places to stay and eat in hunza. From hunza you can do a one day tour of the nagar valley and the glacier beyond, ( by jeep ) or take a short trek up to ultar ( take a local guide )
beyond hunza is Passu and gulmit - trek around passu glacier and make a short visit to the burit lake :) that should be it - for a SOFT vist to gilgit.
make sure you have your air tickets IN-OUT of gilgit , anyway the flights are weather dependent and get cancelled at last minute , with a desperate que building up all the time. I have seen real brawls and fist fights at the gilgit airport :D
The roads are unpredictable and a landslide on the kkh can turn into a real problem if you get stuck in gilgit.
yeah phajjay has laid out pretty much everthing about gilgit. The place is worth visiting, but there are other really nice places in and around the Hunza valley. Gilgit could be extremely dry in winters, and I doubt there would be much snow there.
The true beauty of the region are the towering mountains of the Karakorams, and there are very few places on earth where you can see numerours magnificent peaks that punch over 20,000 ft. It's a heaven no doubt, and don't miss it if you have a chance to visit..
