The region (most of it remained part of the same empires) from around 1500 to 1947, although before that for long periods of time the area used to be divided into various small kingdoms with small periods of unity. You can take that as a plus from the invasions.

But if we see it from a different perspective, this unity finally lead to division of India into 3 countries
