Giving gifts is a sign of care and love. We all do this to our elders, and to younger people.
But if you give too much or if you are given gifts in return, other than being a blessing, when does it become an economic problem of balance and better timing instead of almost all the time when there might be no occasion, even.

..add to it crappy **** that people hand out as gifts, if ppl bring me one more crystal vase or clock, I will break it on their head and toss them out of my house.
They say its the thought that counts but recycling some **** that you did not want for for yourself and a beat up box, and completely out of sync with my decor is a lame thought.
I therefore ask ppl to not bring any gifts, for me, my house, my kids..I may just start a damn ebay business called **** crap crystal junk from cheap ass desis.
I mean and then what, I am expected to give them a gift too, and wither I too get into the passing around of unwanted **** that has ben circulating for 20 years, or buy them something proper
That is why i prefer to just take persihables to people, chocolates, fruit baskets, whatever..

i agree totally, i do the same thing, and pray it is lesson to all future givers.

I think I may be lucky, being a "gori" and all that, the desis kind of excuse me for giving them things that others bring to my house....I always have a stash of "shtuff"....hey you want these crystal candle holders, this bowl, this collection of mens perfumes? We received them but cant use them so you are more than welcome to have."
It IS so very nice that Desis never come empty-handed. It always makes me feel bad though, no one should feel like they need to bring me a present for entertaining them.
Selfishly tho, I have to say that it makes my entire WEEK so much more full of sunshine when its a lovely bouquet of flowers that they bring! Or the dinner so much more tantalizing when its a special crusty-bakery-fresh bread that they bring.
Anyway, I think most of them know us now and forgive us our weirdness....they tend to bring the flowers or the bread.
