Ghutti/Ghurti

Not sure what the exact word is.
Also not sure if there is a previous thread about it.
I know all the fuss about not giving honey to babies under 1 year of age and the debate that goes with it where some parents give 'em honey and nothing happens etc etc.
My question is that is this ghurti giving after birth thing a cultural thing or more of a religious thing ?
I read somewhere that some people mash up a date and then use that especially in some Middle Eastern countries, but I am not sure because I came across this info for the first time.
If honey is a no-no then what did you guys do and did you give the ghurti or no?

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

Its actually called ghurth and its a cultural thing that some families still follow

All they do is just give something sweet just a speck of (can be anything) to the newborn baby from either mother, father or grandparents. They say the person who gives the ghurth is actually passing a good trait of theirs ( their nature mainly ).

Dont know whether it works or not but alot of families do go along with it :)

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

Its a cultural thing to give something sweet to a newborn. The thing with honey is that it contains trace amounts of botulism. So while the majority of infants will not come down with it, there is a chance that they will. And since its almost always fatal to an infant, its not a good idea to give them honey.

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

Its called ghutti

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

I think it is based on tahneek

"Tahneek
When a child was born to one of the families of the Sahaba (the Companions of the Prophet) they would take it to the Prophet so that he would bless it, and apply the pulp of a date, chewed by him, to its palate. This 'tahneek' as it is known in 'Arabic', was to keep the child safe from evil. Therefore, similarly when a child is born into a Muslim family, it should be taken to a virtuous, pious person, so that this person may supplicate for the child and perform the tahneek. Tahneek is among those Sunan whose practice has become rare.
Aisha (RA) narrates that "the people used to bring their newborn children to the Prophet and he would bless them and perform the tahneek"
Sahih Muslim 1:560"

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

i gave my baby honey.. just dont see how something that has been said to be cure for illness cept death could be dangerous to a baby...

but thats my view and i saw it fit for my baby... nothing soothes him when he has a cough.. cept honey

i use it in place of sugar when making his food.. and mashallah he is doing fine

my friend was against it and used mashed up date... another friend just used a speck of sugar.

Thats from the Sunnah. Its called tahneek, you chew the date to mash it and then rub a bit of the juice on the roof of the baby's mouth not the actual date fibers)

Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates: "A son was born to me, and I took him to the Prophet (peace be uponh him) who named him Ibrahim, did Tahneek for him with a date, invoked Allah to bless him, then he returned him back to me.”
(Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.)‏

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

one of my friends in my halaqa had a baby, and they shaykh did the Tahneek. It was nice to watch.

my family calls in Ghutti. They say that whoever gives the baby the ghutti, the kid would have a similar personality as that person.

Ive been begging my sister to let me do ghutti for her kids, and everytime she says no way in heck. :S . lol. (she knows me too well, thats the problem :) )

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

that is soo true afshi... if i had known it would be SO true, i wouldnt have had my mom give it... she suffers from lack of sleep and is a major major light sleeper.... cotton buds falling in america and she will wake up kinda light sleeper...

she passed it off to my son... its not fun! and my god does he talk.. just like his nani! and chanchal.. also like nani..

my mom was not so pleased when i said the above :D

next baby will get ghutti from a non talking, heavy sleeping, doesnt care bout jack but remains happy kinda person... now only to find such a person!

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

this thread is urging me to get the latest status of the baby I lickaoo ghitti some 16 years ago ... gotta check how is she doing :)

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

My husband did tahneek with our daughter. He mashed up some ajwa khajoor and gave her a tiny bit.

The thing with honey according to our pediatrician is that the problem is in the way honey is stored these days. She said if we were sure that its absolutely fresh, then no problem in givng it to the baby. Whatever they to do make it able to be stored is where the problem lies. In the old days, i am sure that was never done so the risk of botulism was never there. I am of the idea, why take a risk? I already suffered when i gave eggwhites to my daughter at 9 months and she developed a rash. It wasnt bad Alhamd but i felt totally horrible.

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

I gave my son honey regularly .... there is a fear of botulism, but I had a nurse visiting me at home regularly and she thought it was ok .... in any case, alhamdullilah, my Sonu darling loves his honey (and he's my bunny :D ). Sorry, I had to add the last part. :p

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

So is ghutti and tehneek the same thing?

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

Giving honey to new born is actually Sunnah. I just recently figured it out... it works as an anti-bacterial. Cleans the little throat & tummy ........ use organic honey.......

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

I don’t know who gave ghutti to my daughter as she was rushed to NICU as soon as she was born and they didn’t allow anything to her for the next 24 hours.

Honey can be dangerous. When I was born I was given gutti of honey . My mom told me after sometime the ghutti was given I turned blue because I was choked . Off course my mom got scared called the nurse , she held my both feet and turned me upside down and gave two-three good slaps on my back and I started breathing again and my colour turned normal …phew !

even i was thinkin the same... but lets wait for someone to respond. i suppose not as tahneek was done by Holy Prophet PBUH by chewin a bit of date then softening it a lil on the finger before givin it to the baby rite and left of his mouth. thaz wot i read abt tahneek on net. so wot is ghutti???

Re: Ghutti/Ghurti

I think ghutti n tehneek are the same. Not sure though
