I want to create an image of my laptop just incase it fails on me one day. Is there any free software out there that’ll allow me to do this? How much does ghost cost to buy?

Norton Ghost is the commercial solution of choice at the enterprise level.
I have also used Paragon’s Drive Backup, and recently also Argentum which has had good reviews from PC magazine. http://www.argentuma.com
For a free solution, I’ve used this with Win98 way back when… dunno if it will do the job for ya: http://www.partition-saving.com/

I found Acronis True Image 8.0 to be better than Norton Gosht. Look at the awards and testimonial it received.

just one more question, does ghost/true image 8.0 allow you to save image to USB? does it see the USB flash disk? what are my other options if c: is not partitioned?

yes it should see your removable drive as well or even a dvd-rw/cd-rw drive if you have it

I second TrueImage.
I would not suggest using USB (external drive?) as you would need to have the proper usb drivers installed on that drive to be able to boot from it. The best option is to create the image of the 'puter and burn in onto a bootable dvd. Next week I'll test out the new Ghost and do a comparison.
