How Ghandis philosophy has affected life of people of India?
Means to ask, do you see the reflection of Ghandi’s philosophy in day to day life of people of India?

Re: Ghandi's Philosophy

That movie shows the practical implications of Gandhi's philosophy.

There were quarters in Indian society who were against Gandhi's philosophy in his life time. Just go through statements of his murderer and that murderer's followers.

Re: Ghandi's Philosophy

only a movie?

Re: Ghandi's Philosophy

No that movie shows what people believe about Gandhi, after years of being canonized and sanctified.
Gandhi was a racist, read his works from his time in South Africa, had odd notions of sexual purity, and was a political tool in the hands of the British Raj. He may may have had good intentions, but I assure you intentions are a dime a dozen.
My hope is that the people of India forget this cult of personality! What India needed was a leader, someone like Washington, Jefferson, or Adams. Instead, we got Nehru and Gandhi....and here we are. I say let the dead lie, and let the living not look back.

Re: Ghandi's Philosophy

I can;t say much, but yes there are things for which I like / respect Gandhi like I respect Mr Jinah. His agenda for simplicity and concern for giving Pakistan its share to name few.

All these leaders were human beings and they have their shortcomings. But one need to hilight and appreciate positive sides of such personalities instead of picking shortcomings all the time.

Re: Ghandi's Philosophy

what are the positive things about zia ul haq? :p

Re: Ghandi's Philosophy

Dear Sir,

I would remind you that the shortcomings of the people you refer to overshadow any redeeming quality they may, and I stress may, have possessed. India and Pakistan are two third world jungle monkeys fighting over a rotten banana. It did not need to be this way. We could have been two shiny beacons for the developing world. Instead we're stereotypes!

Re: Ghandi's Philosophy

^^
To understand a person you need to know the context in which the person lived. Gandhi and Nehru lived in an era which was quite different from the current one. To start a non-violent struggle for independence was quite unheard of in those days. In hindsight things could have been done in a different manner. Are we sure if the outcomes would have been different we dont know. Another aspect that we need to understand is that these people spent considerable amount of time in jails and made huge sacrifices for the country. If we ask any of our present crop of our leaders to do the same sacrifice as these leaders, I do not think any of them would be willing.
