Ghal-ghotee

Ghal-gootee is a Punjabi Swing used to rock little kiddies to sleep. The most original version of it is a bedspread hung in a hammock shape to the side of a Charpai (bed). The kid is put inside and rocked back and forth using one’s leg. Ghal-ghotee servers the same purpose as “Jholna” (or a cradle), instead of singing “rock a bye baby, on the tree top, when the wind blows, the cradle will rock”, the following song is sung (in Punjabi):

“Jhotay MaaiaN, Ru’d BallaiN”

Which means, “when the mom swings the child, all the BallaiN (demons) go away”.

Maybe my Ammi sang that to me in Pushto
