Maybe it was inevitable. Let alone succession issue, in most of others cases Muslims have clear guidance but they still tend to ignore or disobey. It is sort of human nature, mentioned in holy Quran at many places.
For succession, I think, at that time no one was curious as to who will lead ummah after Prophet(s.a.w). Everyone was overwhelmed with sorrow and grief on departure of holy prophet, no one bothered to think about power. I believe Prophet (s.a.w) did not talk about succession, khilafa or leadership out of hikmah, to reinforce the end of prophethood message in its purity. still shia people associate a lot of super natural things to Ali (r.a.) But the moment Abu Bakar (r.a.) got the leadership, the passionate group started disputing it that leadership is right of Ali(r.a.)
