Getting rid of oil in hair after using massaging oil

So since I’m getting older, I’ve noticed that my hair isn’t as thick and lustrous as it used to be. In an effort to preserve my hair as long as possible, i decided to finally start oiling my hair considering all the benefits its supposed to have.

I used olive oil, massaged it into my scalp well, not really bothering with the length of my hair. and slept with it on overnight. The next morning I shampooed 3 times to get the oil out. I massaged the shampoo into my scalp and even left it on for 5-8 mins so it could absorb all the oils and remove it.

After drying my hair it was still disgustingly greasy, we had gone out and my brother mentioned i looked ridiculous. So i went home and shampooed it about 3 more times before I felt it was ok.

Even then my hair was pretty oily but I just waited until the next day to take a shower and shampooed again, and this time the oil was pretty much gone.

My point is whats the purpose to oiling your hair when you have to shampoo it so much to get all the oil out? doesn’t it reverse the effects of putting the oil in the first place?

use head and shoulders shampoo to get rid of the oil

Wow, you most likely used a LOT of oil.

Use a lot less than the amount you used next time. I usually need to shampoo twice to get it all out - which I think is too much.

The same thing happens to me. When I was in Pakistan I used Bio Amla/ Sunsilk or any Pakistani shampoo first to get the oil out and then use an imported shampoo. The reason? In Marketing I studied that the companies put more "detergent" in shampoos in pakistan as people use oil in their hair. The same is not true for imported ones. Try using a "claryfying shampoo" as well which is designed for oily hair. I shampoo twice with a stong shampoo and then use a regular one. Selsun Blue is one that I use to get the oil out. But thing is if you have colored hair this will wreck havoc on your color. I have brought an Indian shampoo this time. Lets see what happens.

but doesn't stripping all the oils out by any method counteract the point of oiling you hair?

just use a shampoo for oily hair and it'll get tid off the oil from the hair in one good wash.

Are you washing ypur hair with cold water? It used to happen to me when I was little until I started washing it with luke warm water.

Re: Getting rid of oil in hair after using massaging oil

I started using herbal hair powder (contains shikakai, reetha, etc) after reading Mistral's post on it not too long ago. It's been a couple of weeks....and I like it. It's easy to use...kinda messy though....BUT....I notice that it gets the oil out (I use olive oil)....and it leaves it very shiny and soft...and I don't see a lot of hair shedding.

Yes, the herbal powder does get the hair out, but is very messy to use outside of Pakistan (more mess, less maids). Shampooing multiple times with BioAmla did not ruin my hair.
