Getting into a Top university

Often I have asked people and they have no clue about this.

Many of us just try to seek a place in average range of uni’s .. but if you want to focus on getting into a major subject degree in a world class university like Oxford or Cambridge then :

  • how do you prepare for it?
  • How long before do you start focusing on it?
  • how do you prepare yourself to beat the competition?

Thanks all for any input here .. I feel this is a much neglected area of career development and many students have no clue how to beat the competition and win world class opportunities for themselves .. Any tips from the more experienced individuals here will certainly help those who are embarking on this journey…

Re: Getting into a Top university

my nephew started his professional course at an IVY League University in the United States, the likes of Harvard University. he did the following:

since he knew he was interested to become a Vet,

-he volunteered at an animal hospital for six months
-he owned a pet birds of which he took care [learned how to clip wings and nails of his birds]
-he maintained his grades very high mid 90's
-he volunteered in taking care of handicapped/injured birds at his university where he was doing his undergrad degree.
-he chose a university for his undergrad degree which is famous for animal and plant sciences.

so, you aim and set your goals. have your grades high, volunteer and get all the facts you can get about the university/program u wanna get into.

They need to find out what they are going to study at university once they finish School. At college, it 'll be helpful to pay more attention towards the compulsory subject in their future field.

-Join Volunteer work.
-Go for work experience.
-Research more about what they want to do.
-Book an appointment at Career center at their college, people out there are helpful and they give you loads of ideas regarding your study field.
-Search all the universities that are famous in that field.
-Also, go through the online reviews of people who have studied at specific uni in that field.
-If you are social , do ask people you meet.
-Do meet the required grades of specific university you wish to go.
-Keep your option wide when it comes to choose universities.
-Work hard.

This is what I could say, I have been through the above list as I am currently studying.
This year top universities in the UK still have student spaces because universities have upgraded their grades and performance. And rise in the fees is another cause.

Extremely helpful review Lily.. In essence the planning and the focus should begin from School years so that all grades can be managed through College ...

Re: Getting into a Top university

^ Yeah definitely, being at college some students don't even know what they are going to study in future. Anything you love doing you will generally be better at. Another way to look at it is what did you love doing when you were young let's say age 5 to 8 - building stuff with lego, drawing, helping people - looking after a sick sibling/animal etc. Apparently your natural loves show up at around this age before you've been too influenced by the media or other people as to what you should do.

Forgot to mention these points...

**-Do a search on the UCAS site? Have a go at one of those career-matching quizzes? I'd suggest getting a collection of uni prospectuses going and taking a look at the courses they offer.

_Also think, what job would suit me? **
