you are right. for the first time we have real competent and professional people commanding the offices. though many other elected 'career polticians' are as usual incompetent, but these few men are indeed what pakistan was in great need of.
do you have any info on the minister for Commerce Trade & Industry Mr. Humayun Akhtar Khan? i wanted to find out about his professional and family background. ive heard he's an actuary and the son of late Gen Akhtar abdul Rehman, who who died with gen Ziaulhaq? any info?
thanks.
^ let’s go through some other Ministers in the present cabinet that are part of this excellent team ![]()
current Interior Minister and head of Narcotics Control, Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat of the PPP forward bloc, are still continuing. Hayat has remained under NAB detention for a brief period with atleast two cases of corruption still pending against him.
*Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao of PPP-S, as minister for Water and Power, in addition to looking after inter-provincial coordination, is also interesting, as he is the only member of his party to reach the National Assembly. Former two-time NWFP minister, Sherpao fled the country to avoid facing corruption charges and mysteriously landed in London. He soon returned after being cleared by NAB of all corruption charges against him. A retired major, Sherpao’s contacts in the army top brass helped his political rehabilitation. He was cleared of most corruption charges, through the courts in record time to facilitate his participation in the elections and was even considered for prime minstership at one point.

I agree with Zakk that some of the politicians in the government are indeed incompetent, and I especially have no respect whatsoever for Sherpa, and its not because you mentioned his name. I saw him on a talk show on GEO, and he was very unconvincing. Even Musharraf is not satisfied with his performance .

But we are all reasonable men, and should give credit where its due. Musharraf handpicked Shaukat Aziz etc to manage the country’s finances, and his commitment to this cause is evident from the fact that the financial team remains the same even after the elections.

Gen Akhter A-Rehman was one of the few Generals who became multi-millionaires in Zia's regime through the Afghan conflict. So regardless of Humayun Akhter Khan's qualifications, I have no respect for him!! He is just another one reaping the rewards of his father's corrupt career- like the many other politicians we have. Most politicians in the cabinet are from the same mould so it's not worth going through them.
As far as corruption goes (original posting), which country is not corrupt?? Corruption exists in all countries and in many third world countries, has become a way of life. We will not get rid of it as it has become part of our daily lives. So as a nation, we must learn to live with it. I read the comments of an expert on corruption who once said that there is nothing wrong with corruption as long as it does not affect the growth of a country. In Pakistan, it has affected the growth so it must be curtailed- Mushy has taken some steps in that direction. In the case of China & India, the economy has been growing for a while despite high levels of corruption and that is fine.

thanks for the info and links :k:
Zakk i agree with you that many of the current ministers are the same old tried and tested, corrupt family and professional politicians who dont care one bit about Pakistan and what they care about is only their personal wealth etc, but as i said in my post that there are some minsiters who are highly professional and competent and exactly what pakistan needs ight now. i had in mind Shaukat Aziz, Humayun Akhtar, Kasuri, Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Ishrat Husain(SBP) and a few others.
no doubt the likes of Sherpao, Faisal Saleh hayat, Sh Rashid, Ch. Shujat, Ch Pervaiz and many more belong to the same corrupt breed that has been tried and tested many times in the name of democracy.
I hold only one thing against gen musharraf, and it’s that he allowed all these feudals and professional politiocians to come back…
I'm confused betwen Generals Akhtar Hussain Malik and Akhtar Abdul Rehman Khan. the latter was gen Zia's ISI chief and died with him and his son is Humayun Akhtar khan, an actuary by profession and Fed Minister for Comm. Trade and Ind. Who was the former?

I have'nt got enough knowledge regarding the activities of the late Gen, but i do think his son is a competent minster due to his qualifications. only time can tell if he will remain strong against corruptin and intoxication of power.
as far as what you think about corruption, i agree, no place in the wide world is totally free of it. we must try and reduce it instead of dreaming about some day when there would be 0 corruption, cause that won't happen. i think it's the common man thats repsonsible for corrpution. you, me, everyone! if every person starts taking responsibilty for his action and follows ethical guidelines, the problems will reduce a greta deal...
