looks like people have a rather low opinion of a phD on gs and desis in general (topic started in chat)
before i say anythng let me clarify, i am not a phD nor am i pursuing one nor will i be getting one…a little too late for me to get into that now
but, most of the people i look up to or have learnt the most from and those that have contributed the most to this world…are phDs
so I wanna know your opinion/???
why this idea that it’s not worth it, etc..
Re: getting a doctorate
Because it isn't
Bill Gates
Steve Ballmer
Steve Jobs
Larry Elison
Michael Dell
Gabe Newell
..... only who can differentiate between an opinion and a joke can do PhD.

The corporate world is no longer an academic world. Ph.D's are great, but a big corporation would rather hire a masters with 7 years of experience than a PhD with no experience. Only times PhD would help you in corporate world is if you are a masters with a full time job and you are doing a PhD on the side. But PhD being such a laborious program, very few attemps that while working fulltime.

Re: getting a doctorate
but there is also an academic world, not just corporate...
there will always be a need for someone to teach the corporate world....and I think to be in academia you should need a phD?
and then it also depends on the subject matter

And not only that, but all research facilities lean towards PhD guys. But the demand is less than what it was two decades ago

Re: getting a doctorate
working in academia has become a rat race for funding, and pushing out papers. its kind of disgusting.
