Any pregnant lady here have it or had it during their pregnancy? If so how did you deal with it? What were the foods you were told to eat, or what were you told to avoid. I just found out I have it yesterday and waiting to visit my dietician on Thursday. All I know is to cut down on carbs like potatoes/breads etc. I was also told to minimize salt intake. ![]()
Re: Gestational Diabetes
Yes carbs, salt and refined sugar you will have to avoid. Once you give birth, you can celebrate with the biggest chocolate sundae ever, as it goes away pretty much at the moment of birth. But its important to follow the special diet until delivery. Otherwise, the baby will get too big but not in a good way, will be all "bad fat" and can also impact your health. I had to follow a modified diet as I was borderline....just hang in, eat what you're supposed to and INshallah all will be fine.
Re: Gestational Diabetes
Stick to your diabetes diet. Keep a food diary.
This is NOT the time to eat ghee shakkar desi style.
Excercise like mad... walks after every meal and other excercise as allowed by your doctor. That is the very best way to get rid of the raised sugar every time you put food in your mouth. Excercise through out your pregnancy is really good for your baby and you even without GD.
Take blood sugar readings as indicated by your doctor. Do not miss any and record them faithfully. This is very important to monitor the progress of GD. If it is not being managed by diet and excercise, in later weeks it may be nessecary to take small shots of insulin. These are not painful at all, so nothing to get alarmed about. Just know that if you cannot manage your GD now, insulin may be nessecary later. This will keep you on the diet and excercise path.
After you give birth, lose all the extra weight rapidly and keep it off with excercise all your life. GD is sometimes a good indicator of possible onset of Type2 diabetes when older.
If this is your first baby, be prepared for a repeat of GD when you get pregnant again. Talk to your doctor about family history of diabetes. The doctor will also check you for certain indications.. a particular type of skin darkening of the back of neck etc.
If possible along with your OB/GYN you should also see an endocrinolgist every couple of weeks. A nutritionist is also good for your team. Talk to your doctors and please be honest about your diet and what you ate or cheated with or blood sugar readings. They need to know the truth to take care of you and the baby.
GD can be managed well with care and seriousness for both your and the baby's good. Do not laugh it off.
Re: Gestational Diabetes
What abt diabetes before getting pregnant? Does having it affect fertility in any way/
Re: Gestational Diabetes
The jury is out on that. All endocrenologists have not come to a concensus about it. But the fact is, any abberation in good health will affect you in some way.

Re: Gestational Diabetes
Even after the pregnancy, the risk of getting Type 1 or 2 diabetes is greatly increased. So be real careful about your diet, weight and health, especially during the menopausal stage.
Re: Gestational Diabetes
Sorry to hear that Afro-sheen...
I just had my baby four months ago , and I had gestational diabetes as well. My numbers were SO high they were sure I'd be diabetic afterwards as well , but as soon as my baby was born , my blood sugar went back to normal.
You really have to watch what you eat , and exercise. Morning walks are the best, trust me , I'm not a morning person , if I can do it anyone can... They'll also give you a food guideline to follow , and you'll have to watch your carbs intake.
Dont stress about it , you and youre baby will be fine inshallah.
Re: Gestational Diabetes
do you know how bad was it? My wife was diagnosed with it but she never adjusted anything (she was boderline and doc just wanted to be extra careful) and my daughter is a healthy (alhamdoliallah) 8 month old
Re: Gestational Diabetes
I am so totally confused and frustrated. I had a bad experience with doctor's visits yesterday. I went to visit a 'nutritionist/dietician'....and the office failed to inform me that the nutritionist wasnt in..so I got seen by a stupid Physician Assistant. And she told me to come back AGAIN too see nutritionist. She gave me this self tester to monitor my blood 4 times a day after every meal and also before breakfast. Its silly, I never got the 3 hour test done though? Anyways on the 1 hour fasting, I got 171...I believe normal range was 65-139 or so. I dunno. I have been watchingmy diet and eating in moderaiton, but after all I am PREGNANT....I dunno if eating this way I am getting the right nutrients. Anyways inshallah, tomorrow I am visiting Endocrinologist on recommendation on my Physician. Inshallah It will be alright. Urghhhh is my only emotion right now.
Re: Gestational Diabetes
Hey SMK, just how high were your numbers, just so I can compare. Now on the 1 hour I had 171. Yesterday I got glucometer whatever. And so far my numbers are perfectly fine. I had 91 after lunch, 67 after dinner and 67 again this morning before breakfast. Due to these crazy docs, I am lost and not sure if my numbers are 'fine' because I am avoiding all sweets, and eating god portions of healthy carbs and proteins.....i gotta see what happens tomorrow.
Re: Gestational Diabetes
edit
worry not...i got my answer
Re: Gestational Diabetes
Hey there Afro-sheen , well , your in the states so I guess the numbers are different. I'm in canada , and the normal here is 7.8, anything uptill 9 would be considered fine, but my number was 29 ! ( it's just a different scale , but you get the idea).
yeah , the dr. said he'd never seen it that high..scared me half to death... I never got the 3 hour test done as well , 'cause there was no need , it's only done when your borderline...
I was very confused as well , but it's not your fault , some bodies just do that during pregnancy.. they gave me a week to get it under control through diet and exercise , the numbers came down but not enough...So, (very reluctantly heh) I had to get shots of insulin for the last 2 months of my pregnancy. But shukar-alhumdulillah, after my baby was born , my body went back to normal.
Try to stay away from sweets obviously , but also from carbs. Dont eat big meals , smaller ones, with 2-3 hours interval in between ( I know, its not easy... I used to be hungry ALL the time in the end, but its worth it , and besides I didnt gain alot of weight in the end as well , easier to take off right?)
Check after every meal , dont cheat , if the numbers are still high , lower your carb intake. Try your best to be on veggies , not even fruit , as fruits have sugar too. You can have protein, so chicken, egss , etc ... all fine. Oil intake is fine too , its jst the carbs and sugars... like only 1 slice of bread , or a handful of rice etc..
Wish I could explain it better , but you get the idea...
Good luck , have a healthy pregnancy a a healthy baby inshallah.
Re: Gestational Diabetes
Well I went back to my Ob-Gn and NOW she wants me to do the 3 hour glucose tolerance test....im so mad why she didn't recommend that earlier. I am confused and just dealing withit. My primary doctor did the A1b...not sure of name, but its a 3 month average of ur glucose level..and that came out fine...but she still wants me to do the 3 hour.
Question, does anyone know if its ok to eat dates/kajoor with this? only asking cuz its ramadan and i forgot to ask my doc while i visited
Re: Gestational Diabetes
I would not eat Khajoor with gestational diabetes. It has a very high sugar content which is not good for this condition.
Re: Gestational Diabetes
do you know what kind of sugar is in Khajoor? ![]()
If something is sweet, doesn’t mean it is harmful…
Have you ever heard of sucrose?
And you did not answer my question about toilet washing in Hindoos?
Re: Gestational Diabetes
one khajoor shouldn't be too bad. it does have a high concentration of overall sugars, but i think it's mostly fructose and glucose than sucrose. also, if you want, you can get the low-sucrose dates. there are tons of variety.
