German justice minister compares US president with Hitler

Berlin, Sept 19, IRNA – German Justice Minister Herta Daeubler-Gmelin
compared the hardline war policies of US President George W. Bush with
those of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, the online site of the weekly Der Spiegel magazine reported Thursday.

“Bush tries mainly to distract (the world) from his domestic problems by going to war in Iraq. That’s his favored method,” the minister was quoted as saying in a closed-door meeting of trade union activists in the south German town of Tuebingen. “Hitler had done that too,” Daeubler-Gmelin, a frequent critic of US global polices, he added.

Germany remains concerned over the prospects of a unilateral US military assault on Iraq, despite Baghdad’s green light for the
unconditional return of UN arms inspectors. Berlin has repeatedly warned that a US assault would lead to a breakup of the fragile anti-terror coalition and would have unpredictable consequences for the political order in the Middle East. Strategic policy differences over Iraq have led to a historicallow point in the post-World War II relations between Germany and the US.

hmmm so what do american say to dubyah is it heil bush or is it mein furer :bukbuk:

Interesting bit of news.

Is it time for spin now? Herta Daübler-Gmelin is now stating that she was misquoted by the newspaper: it is “absurd and libellous to attribute to me a comparison between a democratically elected politician and a leading Nazi.” According to the Guardian, she states that “in a chaotic discussion that touched on Iraq she had referred to diversionary tactics, saying: ‘We know that from our history, since Adolf Nazi’. She denied using Hitler’s surname. Ms Daübler-Gmelin said she had seen that people in the group appeared to misunderstand this, and she had then insisted that no comparison or connection could be made between Hitler and Mr Bush.”

Oh, so it was a misquote?

Well now she's changed her tune and she's stating the newspaper misquoted her.

i read in the Guardian that German newspapers, prior to printing quotes from prominent govt'l figures, usually go back to the individual one more time to confirm whether the quote is accurate. The newspaper claims it is accurate and they will stand by it come what may, she says she has been libelled. Maybe after making the comment she got scared of the general reaction to her words & thought it would cast negatively upon Schroeder's chances of winning the election.

:hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

good one, though...

oh good grief!! I have not been watching the news lately, due to my time upsetness after traveling, but I heard of this incident. In my opinion, I think she said that statement, but was not expecting such a response from US and the rest of the world. I think now they will try to hide the facts and make it look harmles ...sigh anyway it was only her opinion, why can't politicians of other secular countries make statements without fearing reaction from US? ????

Finally some one got it right.

George bush compared to hitler dubyah probably take it as a compliment thats hes compared to Hitler the dumbass :smack:

Lil Bush is angry and has demanded an apology.. I believe the German Chancellor will be providing a written one.

The minister who made these comments is stepping down.

…and goes US pressure :hehe:

what for speaking the truth is there no justice in this world :smash:

the office this person held needed more diplomacy than was demonstrated.

you can only speak the “truth” when it favors the Rulers otherwise just keep quiet.

Those who compare Bush to Hitler show they know little about either man and shouldn't be taken seriously. Even if Bush had not been offended I would think the German Government would have kicked the minister off for showing her stupidity.

true bush is worse :2guns:

Dont worry people. Shes already fired.

Election is over. He has won. Time to bend over and play the poodle, apparently.

Elections are over the main powers succeeded again.
No democracy should allow the oppression of others views, their thinking and sayings.
But then this wouldn't be the FREE world if it would be like this way.
Möllemann had to go first now it's Däuble, lets see who will be next, the new president of the States (aka Ariel Sharon) will through out of a government "with ease".

Hail DEMOCRACY!

They all bend at the end, don’t they?

Germany at pains to mollify Washington, John Hooper
The Guardian, 11 November 2002

One the most acrimonious transatlantic rifts of the past 50 years was close to being healed yesterday after a highly successful visit to Washington by Germany’s new defence minister, Peter Struck.
The start of a rapprochement between the US and Germany sent a clear signal that Berlin would not get in the way of any American-led attack on Iraq by restricting the Pentagon’s access to its bases on German soil. It also offered the prospect of a boost to Turkey’s hopes of joining the European Union.

But Mr Struck insisted yesterday that Germany had not shifted its position on the issue at the root of the dispute - Berlin’s opposition to US policy on Iraq. And, in an interview with the Sunday newspaper, Welt am Sonntag, he stressed that Germany was not about to give in to demands that it spend more on defence.

“We cannot comply with [that] request,” he was quoted as saying. “An increase in the defence budget is not possible for us at the moment.”

Gerhard Schröder’s centre-left government is wrestling with a budget deficit it admits will breach the limit demanded by the EU. Mr Struck has ordered a review of Germany’s defence purchases and said that some equipment orders might be scaled back.

The US defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, signalled a thaw late on Friday after talks with Mr Struck when he told a news conference that relations with Germany were “unpoisoned”. He had declared them “poisoned” after Mr Schröder won re-election in September with a campaign in which one of his ministers was quoted as comparing President Bush’s tactics on Iraq to those of Adolf Hitler.

Mr Bush pointedly omitted to congratulate the chancellor on his victory and was said to have refused to take any calls from him until Friday when the two leaders spoke for about 10 minutes shortly before the meeting between their defence ministers.

The US administration put out a distinctly tepid statement. It noted merely that “the president is interested in getting down to the business of moving forward on issues of common interest with Germany”.

US sources said that foremost among those issues was unfettered access to America’s bases in Germany in the event of war in the Middle East. It is inconceivable that relations could have been improved without a firm commitment from Berlin on this point.

But a report in yesterday’s Bild am Sonntag said the conversation between Mr Bush and Mr Schröder had been dominated by Turkey. Ankara wants the EU to set a date at the Copenhagen summit next month for the start of its accession talks. Backing Turkey’s bid for membership was among three items said to be on a “shopping list” of demands presented to Berlin by the US administration as a condition for improved ties.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported last month that Washington also expected the Germans to back Mr Bush at the forthcoming Nato summit in Prague and support the US proposal for a Nato rapid response force. A further condition was that Germany should not oppose support by the alliance for a US effort to unseat Saddam Hussein.
