Anybody tried this yet? I have tried this before but never quite got into it.
"Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location."
This is a sub-culture. Most perverts and low-lives (politically inclined) aren’t even aware of this stuff. So we’re safe.
Maybe I shouldn’t have posted this here, hunh?
all I’m saying is that someone like me would have reservations about an activity like this due to the reason I cited. I wouldn’t participate just cuz of that… call me paranoid but there are plenty of sick/twisted ppl in the world.
I can see that happening but for example, if someone like me was playing, I'd pick areas close to my home which are predictable. I know the kind of folks that live in the area hence the fear factor would be greatly reduced. I guess it's as much a risk as if you were to walk into a mall one day and have some crazy fella come in with a weapon. Most sociopaths like to be known and recognized for their activities so I don't think they'd choose a cache to play their wicked games. But again, I guess you can never be too safe.
I don't really understand what LC is saying. Do you mean somebody would plant an explosive so 1-2 people who go find that cache would get disassambled? or are you saying the cache's would be in areas that would be in bad neighborhoods? The few times I've actually seen a cache has been in public places, like a mall in Virginia, under a rock in Central Park, behind a traffic-light at a major intersection etc. I've heard of other items hidden in places where you may need to buy a ticket, like the top of the Empire State Building.
But you give me ideas. I'm going to put a cache in the dead-center of Liyari, karachi. Lets see who would go find that. :)
So I registered and have my first cache identified. Told the girls this morning and we're off Saturday morning on our first assignment. They are so excited. My older one is a little adventure-seeker and loves tech stuff so this couldn't be better! Will report back here after we find what we're looking for, with pictures!
We picked a cache in my area. Entered the coordinates in my Navigation. Got there. Used the app on my phone to come to the exact location. Also used the geo compass but didn’t really need it for this. Found what I was looking for, logged my report. It was a lot of fun as you feel you’re anxious to find the cache and you’re not sure because there are hints but you’re uncertain until you’re right at the coordinates and all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place.
It’s a fun outdoor activity with the kids. Teaches them how to look at geographic locations, use tech with nature, and spend time together!! We’ll do a more complex hunt next week!
LOL!
No we were to identify these 2 twin trees. I have to post pics on the site and find out if I found the right trees. And yes, there was a box of chocolate cupcakes with light frothy white chocolate and coconut icing waiting for me !
Oh, you found the cupcakes I left for you? Well I thought there was suppose to be a box with something in it. That’s what I understood from the first post.
Not all “caches” have something. Some are just there for the purpose of you getting out of your homes and exploring the natural beauty around you and getting the thrill of adventure. One of the caches near my home is a trail we’ve walked on several times. But we had no idea there were some significant landmarks along the way. So it’s a learning experience more than anything.
And oh, the cupcakes were delish!! Next time, can I have a sprinkling of powdered cocoa on top please?
IMO - GeoCaching was started by gamers who hid stashes in real word. When you're playing 3d games and are in virtual worlds there are things hidden all around you. You have to be vigilant and look in places where things could be hidden. Those might save you life (in the game).
Now some psychological bhashan: I've noticed myself walking to the train, from train to office, from one client office to the next. I don't pay attention to things around me. Last Friday I left Penn Station and suddenly I was struck by how lovely the weather was. I turned off my Kindle and my headsets and just stood there, breathing, listening to the city sounds, smelling the (partially polluted) air. And I felt so alive. I turned my head and saw a cop and she was a person. I turned the other way and saw a truck drive and noticed that he was human too. For a majority of the times those characters seem like icons to me. It was a very refreshing morning :)
Its good to stop and take a look around sometimes. You'd be surprised with what you'd see!
The cache was hidden in these bushes and contained little presents. My kids were really excited!! So we set off to find it, followed the compass/GPS, got to our location, parked my car, and set off on foot to find the exact location. The clues were excellent. However, after almost 45 minutes of treasure hunting with my little girls, we were a bit disheartened as we didn't find what we were looking for.
So I come back home, log my experience on the website and ask for further clues. Just got an email back from the folks who'd planted the cache giving us more details so in a couple days, we'll head back to find it again.
I'm getting hooked on this, and so are my little girlies!
