Journalists boycott NA for curbing Geo TV programmes

ISLAMABAD: Journalists in the National Assembly on Thursday walked out of the Press Gallery against the ban on Geo TV’s two popular programmes “Capital Talk” by Hamid Mir and “Meray Mutabiq” by Dr Shahid Masood and an attack on the office of a Seraiki TV channel “Kook”.
Giving the statement on the floor of the National Assembly after the boycott of the journalists from the proceedings, Information Minister Sherry Rehman said the government supported the freedom of media and it had no connection with the ban on the said TV programmes.
“We have offered them (Geo) to broadcast their transmission from Pakistan rather than from Dubai and there is an open offer to broadcast the two programmes even from the PTV.” She informed the house that the attack on the Seraiki channel’s building was carried by some private people. Those involved in the attack have already been arrested, she told the house and investigation in this regard was underway. After the assurance from the minister, the journalists ended their token walkout.
