**KARACHI: Pakistan has become the world’s sixth country and the first Muslim state to map the genome of the first Pakistani individual. The complete genome mapping was done jointly by the Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine & Drug Research (PCMD) at Karachi University and Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) in China.
**
The details were revealed to the Pakistani media by Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University and Dr. Kamran Azim of ICCBS at a press conference at PCMD.
Highlighting the importance of the project, **Dr. Choudhary said Pakistan had officially entered into the world of genome mapping and the details of the work would be published soon in a research journal. He disclosed that eminent Pakistani chemist and former chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman was the first Muslim and Pakistani whose complete genome was mapped by Dr. Kamran Azim.
**
“The important work will pave the way for research on heredity diseases, evolution and the over all genetic make up of Pakistanis which now hold a unique genetic pattern as a nation. In the past many people like Dr. Watson and others urged scientists not to reveal their genome publicly but Dr. Rehman has never put any restrictions for his genome draft,” Choudhary added.
**The whole process cost US$ 40,000 and was equally contributed by PCMD and BGI.
**The blood samples of Dr. Atta ur Rehman were sent to BGI where his genome was sequenced by state of the art gene sequencing machines, however, the technical and research work was mainly done by Dr. Azim.
**Genome: The Book of Life **
In his marvelous book, Genome, Matt Ridley wrote:
**“Imagine that the genome is a book. There are 23 chapters, called chromosomes. Each chapter contains several thousand stories, called genes. Each story is made up of paragraphs called exons, which are interrupted by advertisements called introns. Each paragraph is made up of words called codons. Each word written in letters are called bases, which are Cytosine, Guanine, Adenine, Thiamine or shortly A,G,T,C.”
**
**The remarkable achievement of the first genome mapping of any Pakistani is just like opening the software or book of life of a nation.
**
Later, in his presentation, Dr. Kamran Azim said the project would help improve the diagnosis of diseases and also help trace back mutations in genetics of the Pakistani nation. Both Dr. Azim and Dr. Choudhary emphasised to establish a national genomic center and Dr. Choudhary said that the center should be established at the PCMD premises because of the knowledge and infrastructure that exists at the center.
isn’t it just amazing guys!!! i’m so happy!!
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
mA..how brilliant
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
*"Pakistan has become the world’s sixth country and the first Muslim state" *- i don't know how many times i read & heard these words in my little life on earth.
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
Look around you. Are we a Muslim state? We just like to use our Muslim status for sloganeering.
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
First it used to be nawaz sharif vis a vis atomic tests :)
Duniya ki chatti atomi taaqat air islami duniya ki wahid atomi taaqat...haalat tou uskay poori duniya Kay saamnay hay I don't think even the worst countries in the world would want to emulate Pakistan.
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
talk abt bitterness here!!!
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
For 99 % of people this genome thing does not matter, the thing that matters to them are utilities petrol, gas, electricity, inflation, jobs etc. We had a thing called atom bomb for our security, the security condition is infront of every one.
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
If some research is done on alternate power supplies, agriculture, and discovery of minerals. These are the things that Pakistan needs more at this point of time.
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
I understand it wont solve other probs!! i still think its a great achievement for Pakistan ... atleast this guy gave us something to be proud of!!
its definetly a good development!!! lets hope for some more scientific discoveries!

I understand the frustration, but the fact is not everybody is capable of doing everything, let everybody focus on what they are good at. Hopefully we as nation will come good of selecting right people for right jobs and thus elect a government which solve their problem and not the problem of the politicians themselves.

Agreed!
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
Now this is not fair, we are here victim of propaganda by the enemies of Pakistan, we have already believed that Pakistan is failed country and it is set to get divided into many more countries, we do not believe nor does we want to believe in any positivity or any achievement Pakistan may won, specially during these days...
We continue to blame govt ( and rightly so) and ironically, we continue to vote for the same govt.. i.e. Zardari in this case, and when guys like Zardari are in power, little good can happen.. and then again instead of learning any lesson for the blunder we made, we criticize country who have given Its destiny in our hand ( yes Pakistan's destiny is in our hand)... but never ever say that we were/are wrong, instead, every tom dick and harry have its own reason to support any group of terrorists and looters and worse they justify it... and they again blame the country...
The disappointment in the nation is understood, the load-shedding, the economic crisis and many more reasons which we often take to blame Pakistan, is nothing but cases of miss-management and incompetence at its best... and who have supported this incompetent and short-sighted people, yes it is us, you and me, who have voted for Zardari because he is from Bhutto, we have voted for NS, because he is anti-bhutto, we voted for Altaf because he is self-declared leader of certain ethnicity.. after voting for these should we accept anything good??? it is like hiring a highly incompetent person to lead a company with full of potentials... the result would be obvious...
This particular achievement is itself speaking that, No Pakistan is not failed state nor does is the nation of some lunatics who only knows how to kill and blow themselves up, it does says that Pakistan have the right potential and all its problems can be vanished ( as if they never existed) within three to four years by any govt. who is competent and is willing to do so...
SO stop being so pessimistic about it, Pakistan have its share of problem and we as voters and nationals of Pakistan are responsible for creating those problems...
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
Well I personally don't know what good "genoming a person" do or can do, as I don't have much knowledge about it. But it does seem like result of very high and sophisticated level of research in a very complicated matter.
So any research and development activity done by Pakistanis is a very welcome sign and therefore congratulations, :)
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
$40,000 sounds way too little for this process. I would think that more than that amount would be needed just for transportation and boarding of the chinese scientists.
If true than it can prove to be "nano" of pakistan. pakistan should highlight the cost more and may be they will get their bio medical outsourcing going.

They are way cheaper than 100s of Russian scientists employed at ISRO.
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
Normally i wouldnt comment on post stupid as above but still i cant resist to fix your general knowledge. ISRO deals with space technology not in medical science.

Still a scientific research facility filled with hundreds if not thousands of Russian scientists, ;) Get the point mate.
Unless you want to tell us that ISRO is not a scientific research facility but a Tandoori hotel?
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
Woah woah woah!
Easy there, its just a scientific achievement. Its as important as other discoveries/achievements. Quit your whining.
Re: Genome mapping of first Pakistani completed :)
wow now thats something..!
