I heard Donald Rumsfeld saying that its against Geneva Convention to show prisoners of war by Al-Jazeera
What is Geneva Convention?
How does Geneva Convention applies to Al-Jazeera?
Was Geneva Convention followed for prisoners of war in Afghanistan?

Similarly the Red Cross said it was against the Geneva Convention for the US to show film of captured Iraqi soldiers. Rumsfeld is one big HYPOCRITE.
We are done with UN and now Geneva LOL... not worth the paper they are written on.
How does camp x-ray feature in all this?
Rumsfeld should clean his own mess first .

Or what the American's did at Mutla ridge - remember the pictures of the charred Iraqi soldier that ha so famoulsy been shown the world over? It's to shocking to post here...
Once again its one set of rules for the US, and another set for everyone else.
Since when is US bothered about international conventions?
Weren’t we talking about pulling out of the Geneva Conventions back when we started sending people to Gitmo? And these people wonder why the world doesn’t trust us and holds us in contempt!
Also, if our only claim against the Iraqis on the Convention is that they showed the POWs pics, what the hell is this: http://iht.com/images/chunkletphotos/web.surrbottom.jpg ?? (I don’t know how to post pics here) That’s not even almost the only one.
It could easily be argued that the Iraqis showed those pictures as a token of goodwill to let us know their status.. media was the only good immediate means of contacting the US govt on this… We are using the pics of Iraqi prisoners as propaganda.. a little more damning under Geneva’s terms.
Rumsfeld needs to slow the crap coming outta his mouth every now and then. Maybe then we could do something without an absurd amout of opposition…

Spoon, Valid points.
By the way i uploaded the pic on the IHT website for you; unless i am mistaken this looks like Iraqi soldiers being paraded around. Did the US cry for the Geneva Conventions then?

The Red Cross called those pictures a violation of the Geneva Convention as well, as I am sure those gory pictures of decimated Iraqi soldiers at Mutla ridge were (in 1991). American hypocrisy is astounding if not laughable.
V . Very good point :k:
But of course the US called these guys 'illegal-combatants' or something and the Iraqi's called the blubbering mass of flesh (US GI's Joe's and Jane) 'mercenaries' so I guess they can do what they want with 'em.
But I do hope they're treated fairly, like stuffing them in outdoor 2X2 cells and tortured occasionally, anything less and the Iraqi's won't be keeping to the 'Rumsfeld Convention'.
Another sign of double standard is that while Al Jazeera was asked to stop showing that tape (and they did stop), all the major European channels kept on showing those images including Sky news. So what that says is, that since you are in the middle east you are not suppose to do that because it might have an impact on the people of middle east.
Its very strange that SKY is owned by some US corporation.
I am seething because…
What right does the US have to command Iraq to play by the rules of the Geneva Convention when it itself disobeyed the UN’s decision to not go to war?
PUHLEEZ!!!

I want to know where the hell was this damn convention when they bascially whipped out the Taliban and Al-Qead. They used to fill the basements up with cold water and let them drown. What the HELL.
I myself thought the same thing. I believe the soldiers shown in this picture were taken in as POW's after they themselves decided to surrender. Propaganda meant to dishearten Saddam's armies? Likely. Likely to anger Iraqi Forces? Yes.
I think the American soldiers were ambushed and captured and then to entertain the public, interviewed and even some shown with bullets in their brains. Propaganda meant to dishearten Coalition forces and to heighten the moral of Iraqi forces? Likely. Likely to anger Coalition forces? Yes.
I do imagine the families of the captured POW"s were relieved to know that they were alive, rather than missing.
Horrifies me equally to see dead civilians or dead soldiers, but not seeing the dead would also sanitize the ugliness and horror of war.
I'm don't find joy in seeing casualties be they Iraqi, Americans, Brits, Aussies or Poles.
That said, both Iraq and Coalition Armies have said that they intend to follow the rules of the Geneva convention and not harm each others POW's.
On the other note, there have been prisoners released from G.B.
AvgAmericanGirl, PoWs are PoWs whether they have surrendered or ambushed.
I don't see your point in suggesting that Propaganda to dishearten Saddam's army is OK?
I expect Iraqis to treat these PoWs like humans too but found it a bit ironic when the whole media and the US government is shouting about Geneva Convention.
