Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

So…nowadays a LOT of fruits, vegetables etc are Genetically Modiefied…

Do you think they are perfectly safe?

Do you consider it something to be concerned about??

or you are ok with it??

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

Mutant Food :nahi:

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

^ do you even know whether the food you are eating is 'mutant' or not??

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

**On a Serious note though , GM Foods have been around since the early 90's and so far no ill effects have been reported however the FDA does not carry out any specific tests to prove safety and in fact does not acknowledge the safety of engineered foods either apart from citing that the developer has asserted that it is safe...........

Now whether there are ill effects which may not have been detected or may take longer to appear whether its health or environmental ill effects still needs to be reviewed as there haven't been any epidemiological studies .......

**

**

****Do you ? :khums:

Most foods on the market have in some way been genetically engineered or altered from tomatoes , cantaloupes , corn to sugar cane , soybeans , rice and oils…question is unless one grows one’s on veggies and fruits what you buy off the shelf will probably be modified unless you buy directly from organic farmers.**

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

some times GM food is the only options you get so what else we can do in that case? i never spend time thinking on this issue and would prefer not to do this in future.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

I'm sure I've eaten GM food somewhere along the way but I prefer free-range/organic food now. It just tastes better.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

I'm sure here in Pak we mostly get organic food. GM foods are more common in the west.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

alot of crops are fertilized in pak,and with all the unhygienic mandi's....who knows what we eat .....

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

i'm not...our fruit, veg n dairy come from an organic farm.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

I feel it's safe to consume gm fruits or vegetables but not daily basis especially not for kids. I wouldn't reach for canned fruits/ vegetables either.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

organic does not necessarily mean it hasn't been genetically modified.

and if you're aata, rice etc. come from Pakistan or the Indian subcontinent, then you can bet they are GM. the farming methods might be more organic but the crop will almost certainly come from GM seed.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

Soon the entire Agri-culture will be controlled by Monsanto, not a single grain will be organic.....

Come to think of it, I can write a book on this topic

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

I think there already are books.

Back in 2002 I read Captive State by George Monbiot that had a whole chapter on Monsanto's practices. I'm sure since then others have written whole books on the topic.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

I read the thread as 'Genetically Modified Thoughts' lol, I think it's past my bed time. Sorry for ruining your thread. I hope you can forgive me:)
But to answer your question, I would be upset if I was eating GM fruits, etc, it's just so unnatural.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

I don’t like the idea that i am eating GM food, however we have very little option here :bummer: but have totally switched to Organic chicken and organic eggs so far…but its still sooo expensive.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

For now I do not see anything wrong with them. I am not paranoid or skeptic.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

Fear not! Large scale GM trials are already underway in Pakistan. If you’ve had corn in Lahore recently, there’s a chance it’s been genetically modified!

http://www.dawn.com/2011/06/20/field-trials-of-genetically-modified-corn.html

AFTER nearly succeeding in the case of Bt cotton, the US multinational Monsanto is now lobbying for introduction of genetically modified corn in Pakistan and has convinced the government to have field trials of its crop.

Some media reports say that the bureaucracy is apparently inclined to allow its commercial planting although many experts, academics and farmers are opposed to it.

Field trials, being closely monitored by the government agencies to assess its cross pollination impacts, are being conducted in Manga Mandi, about 25-30 km from Lahore. After obtaining initial nod from the regulatory authorities, demonstrative cultivation will take place in 2012.

A spokesperson of Monsanto claims that the field trials have so far been successful and cross germination preventions have proved their effectiveness. The GM corn would bring more reliable and cost-effective solutions and that the insect-protected corn will increase productivity. He said that the countries that approved GM corn had allowed it for human consumption.

But Prof Dr Muhammad Ashfaq, Dean, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, says the issue whether GM foods are safe enough to consume remains unresolved. Although some experts warn of possible hazards to human health in the long run, the main issue is whether labelling GM foods would help consumers by giving them a choice to buy or not to buy these foods, he said.

Re: Genetically Modified (GM) foods..Your Thoughts?

Be careful , this corporation is known to contaminate your crops with their seeds and then sue you for using your own seed for your own crops claiming that you are using their seeds for your crops so you need to pay them. There is a documentary about it on hulu.com.
