Genetic test facilities in Pakistan

I am talking about genetic tests that the doctors recommend to take if you plan to marry within the family. Does any body know about any good labs in Lahore/Islambad to take these tests?

only serious replies please!

Re: Genetic test facilities in Pakistan

Do these tests actually exist? I guess they could, but I've never actually heard of them.

Re: Genetic test facilities in Pakistan

MD i am pretty sure that they exist and are being practised more and more now. These are even recommended for couples marrying outside of the family. Infact i had a conversation with this doctor, and he told me that there is this injection that all women are being prescriped in the 1st month of pregnency, regardless they are close relatives or not( i am not sure about authenticity of his claim)

Re: Genetic test facilities in Pakistan

If you're "planning" to marry within your family, then a visit to a "Genetic Councellor" is very advisable. This can be accomplished via fax, phone, email or in-person....so you dont really need to have a "local" doc for the purpose of determining what the risks are, you have international options available to you. They will be looking for Your family history, "partner's" family history, inter-relationships etc. They map it all out and tell you what risk you are facing and what percentage of risk you face. Really noneed for a face-to-face meeting.

Re: Genetic test facilities in Pakistan

^thanks for the advice. i will do more research on this.

however, as far as i heard about these tests is that they take blood samples from the couple and use that to get results and thats what i was interrogating in.

thanks saro ... i will look into this !!

Re: Genetic test facilities in Pakistan

the simple blood tests would be performed to determine some of the more "obvious" things, like if there is a blood-type incompatability or whether one or both of the parents is a carrier of Thalessemia or other genetically inherited diseases. Typically, a visit to a Genetic councellor involves a long "history" session and then possibly blood tests etc. depending on what was uncovered during the session.

Re: Genetic test facilities in Pakistan

national research labs in Islamabad do all kinds of tests. Go to Dr. Saad Rana, he has clinics in Islamabad and in Lahore. The one in Islamabad is in Blue Area, opposite Poly Clinic. He will direct you to the correct private lab. Dr Rana is one of the best in his field.

Re: Genetic test facilities in Pakistan

I’ve heard orthodox Jews have it done, like us they have arranged marriages too and within some of their communities certain genetic diseases are common so the matrimonial service which introduces partners usually checks if it’s safe for them to have children together or not.

I think it’s pretty neat, I’ve only ever heard of one family whose kids were born with diseases because of cousin marriages and I know lots of cousin couples but you can never be too careful. :k:
