Generalizing everything

Why people don’t use their brain? Why they generalize everything according to their own thoughts? I mean I don’t get it people are smart ,they have brain they know how to differentiate between right and wrong but still then they are at one point generalizing like oh these gora people are sooo bad, people who live in US are all modern and are no where near to religion. If you have bad experience with someone doesn’t mean that every one is bad. Sometimes people hate atheists but that’s wrong you don’t know the circumstances which converted them; you don’t its their parents fault and you just hate them. I think we should deal with open mind about everything instead of calling everyone bad simply because our experience was not good.

Re: Generalizing everything

I had a discussion 3 days back about it with acquaintances .Every individual is different and no 2 people are same.
People usually generalize on the basis of majority.

Talking about “people”, arent you generalizing? :5:

Re: Generalizing everything

There are good reasons and bad reasons to generalize. Its a good thing to generalize about, say, "the african american population has a proportionately high rate of heart disease". This led to wonderful medical breakthroughs for the black community. Just a small example but these things uncover causes and treatments, autism is the latest on the scope in that arena.

I never really had a problem with social generalizations either. The Irish love to tell a story. Italians like to talk. Scottish are cheapskates. Jewish are good at money-making. If you look at these as generalities, with the full realization that there are certainly many exceptions to these somewhat amusing "rules", you see that they also hold true to some extent.

When generalities are used to condemn or abuse a certain group then obviously its a bad thing.

Re: Generalizing everything

I fully agree with M03 ... while there is some good obtained by generalization , some bad stuff comes along as well ... perhaps we must be very very careful when we are generalizing a group in a negative way. Again it comes down to the discussion of "should we be judgemental" .. when we judge others too quick and on face value , we never go down deeper into why a certain thing would have happened and end up generalizing.

I know what you mean..

It drives me mad when the rabid types trash the entire maghrib (west) just because they disagree with the western goverments foreign policies. How can you just tar an entire civilisation like that in one brush? In many ways they are better than us, it’s so retarded…

…But it works both ways though, there are people in the west who think everyone in the Muslim world is evil, hateful and is jealous (lol) of them and that all Muslims follow one monolithic extreme intolerant intrepretation of religion.
