Gender Selection

What are you views on parents being able to determine the gender of their future child?

Are there any circumstances in which you think its acceptable or is it interfering with mother nature and shouldn’t be allowed at all?

Re: Gender Selection

I know people who have had it done…so they got all the clothes etc…thinking that it would be a girl. but it was actually a boy!!!

so they’re not always right so I dont see the poin tin asking. I think its better to find out afterwards …cuz its a nice surprise

Re: Gender Selection

It maybe acceptable in scenarios where the poor women have to keeping producing girl after girl in hopes of having boy some day who will not only support the parents in their old age but also help marry of the dozen sisters that preceeded him. This would certainly give such people a break. But again the technology would surely be abused ending in an imbalance, with the scales tilting towards baby boys in countries like ours.

Under strictly controlled guidelines it would be okay to let parents choose the gender for the second/third birth that too if they already don't have a child of the same gender. One choice per couple :D

Re: Gender Selection

Never play with mother nature except when you want bigger tomatoes or hybrid chillis. :nono:

Re: Gender Selection

I think it's wrong, because knowing most desis/Muslims, here and in the US, there will be a greater selection towards boys than girls. I don't feel its any different than how ultra-sounds are used to determine if they are having a boy or girl, and then end up having an abortion if it's a girl in most countries.

Re: Gender Selection

If they select girls over boys, eventually the population will get very sexually frustrated, and the trend will be reversed. Survival eventually wins out over archaic patriarchial traditions.

Re: Gender Selection

Some people are truly stupid. We know a family who kept on having children in the hope of a boy. So they ended up producing 9 daughters and then finally, a son. This is an extremely traditional family, so the wife will not even step out of the house to work. The guy supports his family on a convenience store graveyard shift job. Plus think of all the jahez. God! I personally don't believe in gender selection but I think people like these should have the option available to them or else they truly will not stop until they are living in poverty.

Re: Gender Selection

^ Survival of the fittest.

If a family is stupid enough to keep having children adn not educating them or working to support themselves then, well, too bad. They deserve to live in poverty because they can't get past their jaahil, "traditional" thinking to better their lives.

Fix this moronic mentality of tradition forbidding you to get an education or working and making your poor son support his 8 sisters for their jahez that the greedy rishtay-walay are asking for before trying to implement the latest medical technologies. It's funny--the ultra-modern method of choosing the gender of your baby is fine and should be available and yet are too traditional to get a job.

Long live social darwinism

Re: Gender Selection

Sara, it would be nice to change the views of everyone and do away with jahil traditions but it's easier said than done. Ultimately social organizations cannot leave these people to die off. We do have a social and moral obligation to help them.

Re: Gender Selection

Unfortunately you’re right. It’s easier to just find a quick solution to the social ills (in this case, the ills being inability/refusal to educate women) than to do anything long-term. And this is th eproblem witha lot of people, especially with Pakistanis, as I hav seen: we like to plan plan plan but nothign gets done because theres too much opposition to any sort of “modernization” which is seen as something evil and “secular.”

Okay–even if these people don’t ever go to a university or getmuch formal education, shouldn’t reading Quran be enough for them? Doesn’t Islam teach that gender selection is interfering with the will of Allah? Doesn’t Islam teach them that education is a right, not a luxury as many claim it to be? Or do they just follow the local Imam who says “this is haram, do this or that” etc, without questioning anything? These “traditional” people claim to be so “religious” and yet when it comes to bettering their lives, they feel that Islam forbids it…

Going back to my earlier point, letting your women get an education adn work so families won’t keep on having children to produce a son, is a “modern” thing, imitating the corrupt western countries, but using medical procedures developed in those same corrupt, western countries to keep your idiotic traditions alive is totally alright. :k:

Re: Gender Selection

It sort of takes all the romance out of it. All the fun about what might be. All the surprise. Makes it seem like “may I have your order please?” :bummer:

Re: Gender Selection

In several places in India there is or will be a shortage of females because of this.
pathetic

Re: Gender Selection

places like india n china probably pakistan would run out of guys. n than who would they guys marry n than the population would die off cus those guys never had kids.. it is surviaval of the fittest... n if you dont want a girl than sucks for you .. the only reason i wouldnt want a daughter is cus girls can be evil b itches sometimes..
why cant people be happy with what they got.. toddler boys have cute clothes. toddler girls have cute hair.
