gender-neutral nurseries- help!

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

^ yes, tho probably not good next to the crib.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

^ how come?

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

hmmm...because the chalk dust wont be good for the baby and you wont want him/her to inhale it.....I know there are chalks which are not too dusty (I am not sure what exactly to call them or what they are known as...),but although it is a cute idea, maybe you could incorporate it into a wall on the other side of the crib...

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

^ Yeah. Most schools are doing away with them for the same reason. And I became a teacher because I LOVE writing on chalkboards :bummer:

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

^ seems a bit reactionary, no? i mean, i don't know... i'd be more concerned with having the baby sleep on organic sheets since its direct skin to skin contact - if that was an issue, i mean - than inhale chalk dust.. plus keep in mind, as babies, they wouldn't be drawing on the walls anyway haha
i'd probably just do the frame thing like she has or something else cute and leave it up until they're old enough to hold their own piece of chalk and scribble.

are you serious about the schools?? jeez. do you think this constitutes wrapping kids in cotton wool? how will they build their immunity to anything if we keep coddling them like this! school = chalkboards. thats it, i'm protesting.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

^ It's not worth the dust collecting in your lungs and the risk of asthma attacks.

But I think it's ok in the room, just not right next to the crib.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

wow!!! love this thread.

Question for mommies: i want to set up a nursery but have a crib with wheels so we can roll it in our bedroom at night, is it practical? any experience? don’t want to leave the baby alone at night.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

also- how much have you spent on setting up a nursery in usd? i know it depends on what you get and etc. but just to get an idea.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

it's a good idea.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

Qiynat, you could even opt for a minicrib or a bassinet on wheels in that case because they’re more compact and easier to move. most cribs in north america measure about 4.5 x 2.5 feet.

This is what we’re putting in the Bean’s nursery: a daybed from West Elm (http://www.westelm.com/products/window-daybed-g093/ - this is my splurge because its pretty, but also because it’ll double as a guest bed and initially, i’ll probably be sleeping in the nursery with the baby so it’ll be good for that. plus it was on sale and that made it cheaper than the Ikea daybed.). plus the crib, a dresser with a changing mat on top, a rocker, a couple of picture ledges i’m going to use as book shelves, a nice chandelier, a rug, and some artwork. the total is coming out around $1000. everything adds up! our crib will be the Gulliver in white from Ikea with the accompanying mattress- Products - IKEA, the dresser is the Ikea Hemnes in white- Shop Quality & Affordable Products - IKEA CA, the rocker is from Wal-Mart- Robot or human?. not sure about the rug but we might opt for Flor tiles in a mix of colours and its coming out to about $300 including shipping to Canada. my only other splurge will be on curtains. i really want nice floor length drapes as i think they add such a nice cozy feeling to any room. i’m still looking into those prices.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

I wouldn’t recommend the chalk wall with chalk dust in a babies room.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

I did have crib with wheels. Even though we didn't do the move daily / weekly or even monthly but I remember in the 2.5 year that we moved her crib back and forth in my bedroom a lot. So it was helpful.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

who do you think has better cribs for the $: target, ikea or walmart?

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

all of these for $1000 USD??? thats AMAZING. i still have 6 more months (IA). please keep the suggestions coming.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

^ I don't like the cribs Target has- the Dwell studio one just looks a little flimsy to me, but I haven't seen it in person so it might not be. Ikea's Gulliver is incredibly sturdy- I know because I went and shook it around like a crazy lady haha because that's the one we're getting for the Bean and Ikea stuff sometimes isn't always the most solid. I love Wal Mart's Baby Mod line the most though, looks-wise. Their Olivia crib and the Modena crib are both extremely cute, as is the Parklane. If you search any of these terms on Ohdeedoh.com, you can see quite a few people have used these in the real room tours and pictures they've sent to the site so its very helpful to see it in a room size-wise and design-wise. Price-wise, they're all comparable with the Ikea one being the least around $140 and the Target / Wal Mart ones being slightly higher around $250 but still ridiculously reasonable given how expensive cribs and baby stuff in general can get. Sadly, the Wal Mart in Canada doesn't carry the Baby Mod line nor do the US stores ship here otherwise I was leaning very heavily towards the Olivia or Modena cribs.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

Our crib was $300; the matching dresser/changing table combo was $400, and the mattress for the crib was $300 (I did not expect to spend that much!)! Some of these items were gifted from grandparents.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

We bought a Baby Mod crib from Walmart (I cant recall the model name right now)...it was an online exclusive I came across, where they were selling it like a bundle purchase..that was with a free mattress....It cost us around $260 (with free shipping) for both items.I wasn't too sure about the mattress at first but its been good and the crib is pretty good too.We have been using it for one year now,m'A.
We saw the cribs at Target too.Their products which are in the same price range as Walmart's are pretty sturdy..(we checked the floor model) but they did not have the color we wanted so we never went with that.
Never went to Ikea so don't know about their cribs.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

We bought the crib from Amazon.com. This one Amazon.com : DaVinci Kalani 4-in-1 Convertible Baby Crib with Wooden Toddler Bed, Daybed & Full-Size Bed Conversion - Easy to Assemble & GREENGUARD Gold Certified - 4 Adjustable Mattress Heights - Espresso : Toddler Beds : Baby It’s very sturdy and quality is great. It’s compared with Baby Mod crib from walmart.

My friend bought this crib Amazon.com : DaVinci Emily 4-in-1 Convertible Crib in Rich Cherry : Baby She loves it!

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

^^I think we saw a floor model for the DaVinci at Target..it was really nice and was one of our options. But I think we went with the Walamrt one because of the mattress included in that price too.
Infact all these cribs in this price range are pretty decent.

Re: gender-neutral nurseries- help!

What mattress did you end up getting and was it organic? Was that a concern? I'm not sure I'm fully sold on the whole organic thing... the Ikea mattres is $90... should we be going with something pricier? Since baby won't be able to tell us him/herself, I don't know how we'll judge mattress quality! I don't want the babe to be uncomfortable or hurting.
