Gen. Musharraf 's Lies

Saturday, October 1, 2005; A16

PAKISTANI President Pervez Musharraf complains that his country is unfairly portrayed as a place where rape and other violence against women are rampant and frequently condoned. In fact, it deserves such a reputation. According to Pakistani human rights groups, thousands of attacks are reported every year, including gang rapes and “honor killings” of women who are accused of having affairs or who refuse an arranged marriage. Most of these attacks go unpunished. So retrograde are Pakistan’s laws that there are more than 1,500 women in prison as a result of rapes – they were prosecuted for adultery – while arrests of men occur in only about 15 percent of reported cases.

Gen. Musharraf, too, deserves the reputation he is earning as a ruler who cares more about how he is perceived in the West than in implementing the policies he claims to espouse, or even in speaking the truth. The general, who seized power in a coup six years ago, has reneged on promises to retire from the army or restore democracy. He has not carried out the reform of Islamic religious schools that he promised in 2001. He has allowed the extremist Afghan Taliban movement to base itself in Pakistan’s western provinces with virtual impunity. He has repeatedly insisted, almost certainly falsely, that Osama bin Laden is not in Pakistan. All the while he has gone on collecting hundreds of millions of dollars in aid each year from the Bush administration, which accepts his words and ignores most of his actions.

Gen. Musharraf claims to champion a “moderate Islam” that respects the rights of women. But when Mukhtar Mai, a victim of a gang rape whose attackers have not been punished, tried to visit the United States earlier this year, the president barred her from leaving the country. In an interview with The Post last month, he claimed that he had relented. But then he said this: “You must understand the environment in Pakistan. This has become a money-making concern. A lot of people say if you want to go abroad and get a visa for Canada or citizenship and be a millionaire, get yourself raped.” This statement was, as Pakistani activists and the Canadian government soon pointed out, an outrageous lie. There is only one known case of a rape victim moving to Canada, a doctor who was assaulted by a military officer. A far more common outcome for rape victims is to be ostracized by their communities or jailed.

When Gen. Musharraf’s statement provoked an uproar, he responded with another lie: He claimed that he had never made it. In fact, a recording of him speaking is available on The Post’s Web site, washingtonpost.com. His words are quite clear. “These are not my words, and I would go to the extent of saying I am not so silly and stupid to make comments of this sort,” the general said. Well, yes, he is.

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

Shalwar bhai, We all know Washington posts been posting all this garbage so none of us really care, we are still behind our prez, and plus, you guys should worry about your own country before acting so concerned for us.

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

This is serious! Looks like he is on his way out.

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

Washington Post is an influential newspaper.....but we should also recall how American leaders praised him recently just like they praised Gorbachiev...

Re: Gen. Musharraf’s lies (ouch!)

Yes, the end of the Soviet Union, American used to praise Gorbachov.

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

Spock

The point is not whether Pakistan is worse than any country in terms of rape. It may not be and sometimes media does a poor job. All that is fine and would have been fine.

But Musharraf made a huge mistake by lying about something that he said on tape. That was simply not smart.

So far, Musharraf's biggest asset has been his better personality than any other head of state. He has made the blunder of his life. Just wait and see how Western media goes after this guy from now on. When you deny something you said, you are calling the reporters as liars. They will take it personally.

Re: Gen. Musharraf’s lies (ouch!)

If wishes were horses :hehe:

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

Talwar, you are a smart guy....but how would the Western elite tolerate Musharaf-bashing?

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

Musharaf will be fine, he may have put his foot in his mouth, but thats not going to have much effect on him...

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

Ina country of 160 mm people, not one able leader can be found. Sad...

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

He lies all the time. This is no secret in Pakistan but finally the US/West is starting to realize how two faced he is

Just some examples of his lies and hypocrisy during his years in power:

  • On the one hand he is the champion of 'enlightened moderation', while at the same time he is constantly in bed with right wing religious extremists

  • He constantly talks of transparency and good governance while making a career of openly buying loyalties of corrupt politicians, and appointing proclaimed murderers as governors of provinces, and convicted criminals as ministers in his cabinet.

  • He preaches the importance of having only literate people in the assemblies and government while personally picking individuals with fraudulent degrees to be ministers.

Many had high hopes when he came in, but he has turned out to be a power hungry liar, just like the rest :(

Re: Gen. Musharraf’s lies (ouch!)

Not true, but the perennial rulers of Pakistan, the Army have no interest in allowing a good leader to rule as it would reduce their importance and ‘earnings’.
That is why the most corrupt like Chaudfry Shujaat,Sheikh Rashid,Arbib Rahim have been promoted by them.

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

What about Zardari etc RD?

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

hahahaahha. again a post from washington post.. tahts like the 4th or 5th news posted from that newspaper.. seems like sumone in the press in washington is boilin hard..

Re: Gen. Musharraf’s lies (ouch!)

Put this liar behind the BARS. We have had such GREAT leaders in the past and this liar is a DISGRACE to pakistanis.

Let’s bring the democracy back and the best way to move forward is to bring our GREAT leaders of past such as Nawaz Sharif, Benazir, Altaf Hussain etc(they only made small silly mistakes) back in our country to form the government with REAL ISLAMIC leaders like Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Fazl ur Rehman etc.

This Shaukat Aziz and liar Musharraf are only filling their own pockets and promoting RAPE culture in pakistan.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Can’t believe these LOSERS mentality and their hatred for Musharraf, these clowns can’t do jack apart from criticising someone who is at least TRYING to do something for pakistan.

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

only if we all were to look at our own mess.. we would be soo wonderful peace loving ppl.. i mean washington has it self sum worst rates of crimes in the world.. i mean there is a rape in USA every 5 mins.. not sayin it doesnt happen in pak.. bt i think its best we start concentrating on our selves..

i salute him.. :D

Allah hafiz

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

Yeah that's the thing cheebu, do you expect him to be perfect???He is human, he can make mistakes, it can happen to anyone.
If these guys open their eyes and think about it sensibly, they will realise that sometimes you can't control these kind of crimes no matter how much you try.

(i know it's off topic but just an example)
The Australian government has been trying it's reduce rod toll involving drunk drivers, they have introduced drug testing, massive breath testing, hefty fines, licence cancellations and GOD knows what more BUT amazingly the road toll keeps on increasing every year(with limited success). Now does that mean they are promoting drunk drivers to kill others on the road?????

Mushy has been trying his best to bring women on par with men(to some extent) on political scene, giving them more representation in parliament is one example BUT his critics would not wanna know anything like that.

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

Danda, may I remind you how India reacted to newsweek when it did a story on vajpayee's incompetency, the guy used to sleep through important meetings...

Re: Gen. Musharraf’s lies (ouch!)

wash com-post is a leftie bhonpoo hell bent on discrediting President Bush’s allies. They couldn’t pin any other blame so now they want to lynch Musharraf in the name of some floozy NGOs.

The garbage editorial wants to have it in his way from every direction. They know that they can’t bring down Bush before 2008, so now they have embarked on bringing down Bush’s allies.

Damn Kommies.

Re: Gen. Musharraf's lies (ouch!)

^^ The issue with Pakistani an Bharati intellectuals is the same. They are mostly lefties, and hence wash com-post is their bible.
